SCIENCE
Third grade is learning about forces. Students have been learning about the six simple machines (inclined plane, screw, wedge, wheel and axle, pulley, and lever).

MATH
The class is practicing subtraction with regrouping. Students are also practicing subtracting by combining place values. Please continue to practice the basic facts at home.

READING/LANGUAGE ARTS
This week third grade is reading "Pop's Bridge." In this historical fiction story, Robert's dad and Charlie's dad are part of the crew building the Golden Gate Bridge. Robert feels his dad has the most important job as as a skywalker. After an unfortunate accident during the building of the bridge, Robert realizes all of the jobs constructing the bridge are important for completion. The comprehension skill focused on compare and contrast. The vocabulary strategy had students studying word families. Students learned about common and proper nouns as the grammar skill. The phonics skill worked on the long o sound.

The lesson 3 weekly assessment results have been included in the take home folder for your viewing.

ME MUSEUM
Just a reminder that students need to bring their three items and note cards for their exhibit in the ME museum on Friday, October 4th.
FOOD PANTRY
Third grade will be walking to the food pantry on Friday, October 4th. This is a wonderful experience for students to volunteer in our community.

MASS
Third grade is scheduled to lead the mass on Wednesday, October 9th. Parts have been included in the take home folder. Please practice speaking parts at home. We will practice at school, but all additional practice will be beneficial for fluency. In third grade, students all go up to the microphone by themselves to do the readings. Third graders are a bit nervous the first time doing this, so the extra practice at home can calm their nerves.

BOOK ORDER
Included in the take home folder is the October book order. Order can be submitted online by using a credit card or returned to school by writing a check. The book order is due on Friday, October 11th. Scholastic book orders are a great way to add to your child's personal library at an affordable cost.
