Math
Third grade students have completed a Beginning of the Year Test. In May, students will take an End of the Year test to covering each of the same topics. The tests will help measure growth.
The first chapter in math will cover addition and subtraction. Students will use number patterns, round to the nearest ten and hundred, estimate sums, and be introduced to math properties. Students will also work on addition and subtraction fact fluency.
Reading/Language Arts
Students have taken a comprehensive screening assessment. The test covers skills in language arts, phonics/spelling, writing, comprehension, and vocabulary.
The class began lesson 1 in the reading series. We will take the rest of the week and next week on lesson 1. Students will be coming home on Thursday with the spelling words for lesson 1. The post test will be next Friday. Students will also bring home a spelling packet. This is due next Thursday.
Science
Unit 1 in third grade science focuses on the engineering process. The class has identified how to define a problem and identifying a solution. The class has learned about criteria and and constraints.
Students in third, fourth, and fifth grade have been discussing having a growth mindset. Our brain acts like a muscle, the more we use it, the stronger and smarter our brain become. A person with a growth mindset embrace challenges, gives their best effort, learns from feedback, becomes inspired by other people's successes, and believe their intelligence change if they work hard. Each student has set a goal for themselves.
Social Contract
Students in third, fourth, and fifth grade created a social contract to follow this year. These are the "rules" that will be enforced in the classroom, at specials, at recess, and in the hallways. A copy has been sent home in the take home folder. Please discuss the social contract at home with your child.
Spirit Days
The first Spirit Day of the year is on Friday, August 29th. Pay $1 to wear sweats and/or hat. All money raised goes towards the school's Pay It Forward fund.
