Happy last day of school! It has been a successful school year for the third grade students. Here is a picture from the first day of school to the last day of school!

Creston Arts Center
Included in each student's take home folder is about a writing contest to compete in. If wanting to participate, please return to the Creston Arts Center. The deadline is June 1st. The first 150 entries receive a McDonalds certificate. 1st-3rd prize will be recognized on the Creston Arts website and get a free Southern Prairie Family Fitness pass. The 1st place winner will have their writing published in the Creston News Advertiser and get a Creston Arts t-shirt.

Summer Break
Thank you for sharing your child with me during this school year. I hope everyone is able to have a relaxing and safe summer break. I hope the students take time this summer to play outside, ride their bikes, visit the library, and go swimming. I also hope the students are able to read some, practice cursive, and work on the basic math facts occasionally as well. I will see everyone back in August ready for 4th grade!

Science
Students experimented with sinking and floating. The students were asked to design an aluminum foil boat that could float. If the boat was able to float, pennies were added to see of the boat could handle weight. After doing the initial testing, as a class we discussed floating and sinking and what allows boats to float. Students then did a redesign if their boat sank or a different design if their boat was able to float.

Reading/Language Arts
The class is reading aloud the novel Poppy. The class has read through chapter 7. The class discusses vocabulary, identifies setting, and discusses comprehension as the story unfolds.

The lesson 25 weekly assessment results have been included in the take home folder. Also the FAST testing results have been included in the take home folder as well.

The students will take the ""End of the Year spelling post test on Friday, May 20th. This week students practiced the words using cursive handwriting. Please practice cursive handwriting over summer break.

The biography project/presentation rubrics have also been included in the take home folders. Overall the students did a FABULOUS job of presenting the information learned.

Math
The third grade class continues to work with fractions. Students have been identifying whether a fraction is greater than or less than another fraction using same denominators and same numerators.

Third graders have reviewed telling time and measurement.

Mass on May 25th
For the mass on Wednesday, May 25th, students are asked to wear vacation shirt and shorts. No mass attire is required. This will also be the day those students raising at least $50 will get to silly spray Mr. McCabe.

Music Concert
The spring music concert is scheduled for Wednesday, May 25th at 6 PM at the Creston High School gym. A dress rehearsal will take place on during the afternoon of the 25th. A permission slip has been included in the take home folder. Please return back to school as soon as possible.

Last Day of School
The last day of school is scheduled for Thursday, May 26th. Field Day is planned from 9:45 AM-11:45 AM. Students are asked to wear tennis shoes. Students may also bring a blanket to sit on. We will take water bottles across to the activities. School will be dismissed at 12:10 PM. No lunch will be served on the last day of school.

Thank you parents for a TERRIFIC school year. I have enjoyed watching each student progress with his/her skills. I have enjoyed building a relationship with each student. I truly love my job, and it is because of the great students and wonderful parent support.

It has been a busy week with Lap-a-thon, leading the mass, the Biography Bash, and the field trip to the Creston Arts Center.









Reading/Language Arts
This week the class read Mountains-Surviving on Mt. Everest by Michael Sandler. In this informational text, students learn about Temba Tsheri being the youngest person, at age 16, to reach the top of Mt. Everest. The comprehension skill focused on text and graphic features. Students reviewed using adjectives and adverbs when comparing. The class also worked on the suffixes of -less, -ness, and -able. The vocabulary skill covered analogies.

I have start FAST reading testing this week with students. Results will be sent home at a later date.

The lesson 24 weekly assessment has been included in the take home folder.

This was the last week of the class using the reading textbook. For the next two weeks, students will be completing a novel study.

Next week there will be an end of the year spelling test. The list will contain 25 words, one from each week. Students will take a pretest on Monday. Each day the students will have an assignment that covers the words to complete. The post test will happen on Friday, May 20th.

Math
The students are continuing to work with fractions. Students have been finding equivalent fractions by using models and a number line.

FAST math testing will take place next week.

Science
This week the students explored balance and center of gravity by creating balancing robots.

On the Trail of Iowa Corn Field Trip
The third grade class will be attending a field trip on Friday, May 13th to the Neely Kinyon Research and Adair County Fair Grounds in Greenfield for an agricultural field trip. The class will ride the trolley to and from this field trip. We will leave around 8:30 AM and return around 2:30 PM. Please dress in comfortable clothing that could get dirty since we will be outside for most of the day. Tennis shoes are also  recommended. Lunch is provided on site.

Math
There will be a test over fractions at the end of the week. The next topic in math will continue to work on fractions as well as telling time and measurement.

Reading/Language Arts
This week the third grade is reading the  selection "Dog of the Sea Waves" by James Rumford. In this realistic fiction selection, 5 brothers discover uninhabited land. In the process, they help a sick seal. Manu, one of the brothers, develops a special friendship with the "Dog of the Sea Waves. "  The comprehension skill covered author's purpose and analyzing illustrations. The grammar skill covered complex sentences. Students used the prefixes of un-, pre-, re-, and bi- as the phonics skill. The vocabulary skill covered the shades of meaning of words.

The lesson 23 weekly assessment results have been included in the take home folder.
Science
Throughout the remainder of the school year, the third grade students will be doing investigation and experiments. This week the class made Oobleck to test whether it was a solid or a liquid.

Mass
Third grade has mass with the kindergarten class on Wednesday, May 11th. Parts have  included in the take home folder.

Biography Bash
The "Biography Bash" for the third grade students to share their projects will be held on Wednesday, May 11th following mass (10:15-11:00 AM). All parents and special guests are invited to come view the projects.
