Science
Students have learned about the forces of friction and gravity. Students are also learning about magnetism.

Math
Third grade has started chapter 2. Students have organized data from a tally table to a frequency table. The class has also read, interpreted, and made picture graphs. Students are using a key when reading a picture graph.

Reading/Language Arts
The beginning part of the week was spent completing the Unit 1 Benchmark test. There are two sections to the this test. The "Reading and Analyzing" section tests the students comprehension over unfamiliar texts. The second section of the test is "Revising and Editing" where students look for mistakes in the way sentences are written and need changed. These tests require students to read and comprehend what was read. They are not tests that can be completed quickly. The results have been included in the take home folder.

Students were also introduced to another form of writing. Students have wrote descriptive paragraphs and personal narratives. This week students wrote opinion paragraphs. Students wrote about whether they would rather have a dog or a cat as a pet, and would they rather have it be hot and swim in a pool or be cold and ski down a mountain. We will continue to write opinion pieces.

We have started lesson 6 in the reading series. Students are reading the narrative nonfiction story "Bat Loves The Night." The comprehension skill covered sequencing. The vocabulary skill covered the suffixes of -able and -ible. Students worked with verbs in grammar. The phonics skill focused on words with VCV pattern. This week's spelling packet will be due on Monday, October 21st. That is when the lesson 6 post test and weekly assessment will be. We will also take the lesson 7 pretest on this day. A new packet will be sent home Monday that is due next Thursday, October 24th.

Included in the take home folder are the results of last week's lesson five week assessment and the Unit 1 Benchmark results.

Mass
Third, fourth, and fifth grade will be leading the mass on Wednesday, October 23rd. Parts have been included in the take home folder. Following the mass on this day, there will be a coffee and donut reception for guests of students in third, fourth, and fifth grade.
