3rd Grade News

Science
Third grade continues to learn about the solar system. Students have learned about rotation and revolution, what causes seasons, and what causes day/night.

Math
Third grade has moved into learning about the concept of division. Students will relate the process of division to multiplication. Students will also learn how to divide using repeated subtraction.

The basic facts multiplication test has been included in the take home folder for you viewing. Please continue to practice the facts your child.

Reading/Language Arts
This week third grade students are reading the informational text "The Mystery of the Albertosaurus-Phillip Currie's Hunt in the Badlands." The comprehension skill covered drawing conclusions. The vocabulary skill focused on the suffix -ly meaning "in a certain way." Students worked on the /j/ and /s/ sounds and VCCCV words in phonics. The grammar skill continued to work with adjectives. This week students are using adjectives to compare two nouns by using -er, -ier, and more and comparing more than two nouns by using -est, -iest, and, and most.

The results of the lesson 16 weekly assessment have been included in the take home folder. 

Catholic Schools Week
Sunday, January 29th through Friday, February 3rd, St. Malachy School will be celebrating Catholic Schools Week with some fun activities planned. There are dress up days planned for each of the days throughout the week.  All of the days were given in detail last week. There is a note in the take home folder telling about each day as well.

St. Malachy Foundation Gala
The foundation's annual gala (dinner and auction) is scheduled for Saturday, March 4th. Donations are being accepted for the live auction and silent auction items. Notes were sent home last week detailing each of these items for the auction. Please send donations to school by Friday, February 24th.

3rd Grade News

Reading/Language Arts
Mr. Kissell is teaching reading/language arts starting this week. Students read the humorous fiction story called "Judy Moody Saves the World" by Megan McDonald. The comprehension skill focused on story structure such as setting, characters, and plot. Students learned about adjectives in grammar. The vocabulary strategy covered context clues. The class worked on words with air, ear, and are in phonics.

The lesson 15 weekly assessments results have been included in the take home. These are yours to keep.

Over the next two weeks third grade will be taking the Unit 3 Benchmark test. Results will be sent home when the test has been completed.

Science
Third grade continues to learn about the solar system in science. Students have been learning about comets and asteroids.

Math
Students continue to work on multiplication facts. In addition to learning multiplcation properties, students have practiced the basic facts. Students will be taking the Chapter 4 test this Friday. A test over the basic multiplication facts (0-10) will take place on Monday, January 23rd. Please continue to practice the basic facts at home. The next chapter will focus on division.

St. Malachy Gala
The annual St. Malachy Gala is scheduled for Saturday, March 4th. This year Cali Purdum is in charge of the live auction basket. This year third grade is doing a "Relax and Pamper Yourself" basket. Items for the basket might include bubble bath, bath salts/bombs, robe, slippers, candles, relaxation music, gift certificate for a massage, gift certificate for a pedicure/manicure, gift card for a facial, foot spa, bath towel/washcloth, lufa sponge, body lotion, body scrub, foot scrub, face mask, nail polish, chocolate, wine, and basket to put the items in. The silent auction is being organized by Danielle Steele. It will be a framed print that includes the St. Malachy logo drawn by Bubba Sorensen. Around the logo, each student will be drawing a picture of him/herself along with each student's signature. Please send all donations (monetary or items) to school by February 24th.  Checks can be made payable to Nicole Burg. All donations for the auction are greatly appreciated. Notes about each auction item have been included in the take home folder.

Catholic Schools Week
Catholic Schools Week is scheduled for Sunday, January 29th-Friday, February 3rd. On Sunday, January 29th, there is a Eucharistic Celebration at Holy Spirit Church at 9 AM and brunch to follow. Sign up sheets went home with the students in last week's take home folder. On Monday, January 30th is Blue and Gold Day. Students need to bring a sack lunch to eat with their Advent Angel. Teachers will be going out to lunch from 11:30-1. On Tuesday, January 31st, students can wear sports wear (this included sweats). During the afternoon there will be a basketball activity for students and teachers to participate in. The dress up for Wednesday, February 1st is America Day (red, white, and blue). There is no mass on this day. Students will making valentines cards for service people and nursing homes. Thursday, January 2nd, the dress up day is Pajama Day. The talent show is also scheduled for this day. The time of the talent show will be determined by the number of acts. Try outs are taking place this week (January 20th) and next week (January 23rd and 27th). The sign up sheet is located outside of Mrs. Mitchell's room. Friday, January 3rd, is Dress Up Day. The grandparents/special guest mass begins at 1:30 PM at Holy Spirit Church. There is a cookie and punch reception afterwards. Chromebooks

Thanks to generous donations to St. Malachy School, students in kindergarten through fifth grade are now 1:1 with computers in the classrooms. In addition to using the computers for coding and ST Math, third grade has also used them for practicing basic multiplication facts and looking for synonyms with an online thesaurus.

Math
Students continue to work on multiplication and more multiplication. The class learned about the Associative Property of Multiplication. This is also know as the grouping property, so (2 X 3) X 4=24 and 2 X (3 X 4)=24.

Science
Third grade has been learning about the solar system. Student have studied the moon and are learning about the planets.

Reading/Language Arts
The selection that third grade read this week "The Extra Good Sunday" from Ramona Quimby-Age 8. The comprehension skill focused on the understanding of characters. Students used a thesaurus to look up synonyms for the vocabulary strategy. The phonics skill covered words with er, ir, or, and ur. The class also worked on verb tense (present, past, and future) in grammar.

Included in the take home folder is the lesson 14 weekly assessment results. These are yours to keep.

Students will be taking the Benchmark 3 Test over the next two weeks. In addition, third grade will be moving ahead in the reading series.

Reading Incentive Program
During the month of December third grade read a total of 2,673 minutes. Six students turned in the calendar, and five students met the goal for the past month. Caden Simmons read the most minutes with 668 total.  The goal for January, February, and March has increased to 500 minutes. Please help your child meet this goal.


Talent Show Try Outs
There is a talent show scheduled on Thursday, February 2, during Catholic Schools Week. All students are encouraged to participated in the talent show. There are try outs for the talent show scheduled for Tuesday, January 17th, Friday, January 20th, Tuesday, January 24th, and Friday, January 27th. Try out times are from 12:20-12:40 PM (recess) on the above days. There is a sign up sheet outside of Mrs. Mitchell's room for students in third, fourth, and fifth grade to sign up to try out for the talent show.

Introducing... A Student Teacher

Third grade is pleased to welcome Mr. Ryan Kissell as a student teacher to our classroom. Mr. Kissell will be with us from January 9th-March 3rd completing his experience. He is completing his elementary education degree through Buena Vista University. He also works for Fastenal Company. He is married and has three children ages 8, 7, and 3. He enjoys coaching youth sports and spending time with his own children at their activities.

3rd Grade News

Welcome back to school. I hope everyone had a good Christmas and New Year. I am excited to be back in school. There will be plenty to do until the next break from school in March.

Reading/Language Arts
This week students read "Aero and Officer Mike-Patrol Partners" an informational text about a police officer and his K-9 dog. The comprehension skill focused on author's purpose. Students worked on prefixes of im- and in- as a vocabulary strategy. In grammar students learned about pronoun-verb agreement.  The phonics skill covered vowel plus r sounds.

The lesson 13 weekly assessment have been included in the take home folder.

Math
Third grade continues to learn the multiplication facts. Please practice the facts of zero through ten at home. Students also learned about the Distributive Property of Multiplication. The property states multiplying a sum by a number is the same as multiplying each addend by the number and then adding the products. An example of this is 6 X 7= (6 X 5) + (6 X 2), then 30 + 12= 42, so 6 X 7=42.
  
Science
Third grade is now learning about the solar system. Students will learn about the planets. the sun, the moon, and other objects in the solar system throughout this unit.
