3rd Grade News

Math
The students in third grade continue work on division. Please continue to practice the basic facts at home. Students will have the chapter 7 test towards the end of next week.

Science
Third grade is in the process of preparing for a test covering physical and chemical changes. There will be a test over changes in matter on Monday, April 2nd.

Reading/Language Arts
This week third grade is read the selection"Mountains-Surviving on Mt. Everest." In this information text, the comprehension skill reviewed text and graphic features. Students also reviewed adjectives and adverbs that compare in grammar. In phonics, the students worked with suffixes of -less, -ness, and -able. Students also learned about analogies as a vocabulary strategy.

Next week third grade will be taking the Unit 5 Benchmark Assessment. Students will be also be reading a novel set aloud in class. Students will also be working on their writing skills. The class will not be moving ahead in the reading series.


Food Pantry
St. Malachy School is still accepting donations for our local food pantry. Items to donate include paper towels, toilet paper, and kleenex. Please have donations at school by Friday, April 6th.


Reading Incentive Program
March calendars are due back to school by Thursday, April 5th. The goal for the month of March is 500 minutes. Pizza certificates will be sent out then. March is the last month for the reading incentive program.

Iowa Assessments
St.Malachy School students will be taking Iowa Assessment Monday, April 9th through Friday, April 13th. Testing will take place during the morning. Students will need #2 pencils. No mechanical pencils are allowed. The PTO will provide treats for the students during the week.

Spring Break
There is no school on Friday, March 16th due to parent/teacher conferences on Thursday, March 15th. Spring break runs from Monday, March 19th through Friday, March 23rd. School resumes on Monday, March 26th. I hope everyone enjoys their time off and comes back to school ready to finish the school year strong. My family and I are going on a cruise to Cozumel and Tulum, Mexico. The ship ports in New Orleans. I am excited for warm weather!

Fish Fry
Holy Spirit Church and St. Malachy School is hosting a fish fry on Friday, March 23rd from 5:30-7:00 PM. Volunteers are still needed to help with this event.

Sedar Meal/Crosswalk
The annual Sedar Meal will be on Thursday, March 29th. Following the meal, will be the Crosswalk from St. Malachy School to Holy Spirit Church. In last week's take home folder was a permission slip. Please return after spring break if you have not already done so. Students are asked to wear a white shirt on this day. A whole school photograph will be taken at the church.

St. Malachy School had the groundbreaking for the new addition today after mass. The project is expected to be completed mid-September.

3rd Grade News

Science
Third grade took a test over properties of matter on Thursday. Students will study about physical and chemical changes next.

Reading/Language Arts
This week's fantasy story "The Journey of Oliver K. Woodman" students read letters written between a niece, her uncle, and those who take Oliver on his journey from South Carolina to California.  The comprehension skill focused on sequence.  Students learned to look for clue words such as first, next, then, and last.  The vocabulary strategy covered on the suffixes or -er and -est.  In grammar the class worked on possessive nouns and pronouns. The phonics skills focused on the suffixes of -ful, -y, -ous, -er, and -ly.

The lesson 22 weekly assessments have been included in the take home folder. These are yours to keep.
Math
Chapter 7 will focus on division facts and strategies. Please continue to practice the basic facts at home.

Food Pantry Donations

St. Malachy School students and staff are collecting items during this Lenten season to donate to our local food pantry. Items to donate include toilet paper, kleenex, and paper towels. Please do what you can to help out this worthy organization.

Reading Incentive Program
Congratulations to Taylor, Melanie, Sadie, Rhett, Hank, and Donald for meeting the reading goal for the month of February. The most minutes read for the month was by Sadie with 1,420 minutes total. Total minutes read for the month February was 4,641 minutes.

The goal for the month of March is 500 minutes total. I encourage all students to read and record their minutes read during the month. March is the last month for the reading incentive program.

Parent/Teacher Conferences
Parent/teacher conferneces are scheduled for Thursday, March 15th from 1:00-5:00 PM and 6:00-9:30 PM. School dismisses at 11:50 AM. No hot lunch is served on this day. There is no school on Friday, March 16th.

There is no school from Monday, March 19th through Friday, March 23rd due to spring break. Classes resume on Monday, March 26th

This week the students are reading an informational text entitled "The Journey-Stories of Migration" in which they learn about locusts and whales and the reasons they migrate. The comprehension skill covered comparing and contrasting. The phonics skill worked on the endings -ed and -es. The vocabulary skill focused on . Students reviewed adjectives and adverbs that compare in grammar.

The lesson 21 weekly assessment results have been included in the take home folder. These are yours to keep.

Math
The class will have the chapter 6 math test over the process of division on early next week (Tuesday or Wednesday). Please continue to practice the basic multiplication and division facts.  Students can practice the basic facts using the following link Flash Card Math.

Science
Third grade has been learning about matter. The class will have a test next week over this topic.
