Third Grade News

Reading/Language Arts
In this week's informational text "Aero and Officer Mike-Patrol Partners" students learn about a police officer and his K-9 dog. The comprehension skill focused on author's purpose. Students also worked on the vocabulary skill of the prefixes im- and in-. In grammar students learned about pronoun-verb agreement. The class covered R-controlled vowel worked as a phonics skill.

The lesson 13 weekly assessment results have been included in the take home folder.
Math
Students continue to work on multiplication. The class has worked on the factors of 0, 1, 2, 3 4, 5, 6, and 10. Any additional help on practicing multiplication fact fluency at home would be greatly appreciated.

Science
Students have been learning about the life cycle of nonflowering plants. Students have compared the life cycles of flowering and nonflowering plants as well.
Friday, December 21st
On Friday, December 21st after 10:15 AM will be will having our Christmas party. Students can wear ugly sweaters to school. During the party will do the holiday sock exchange, have treats, and play games. Students can bring board and card games from home if they wish. Students need to bring a sack lunch (milk provided). Lunch will Advent Angels will be from 11:45-12:15 PM. In the past, some students have brought a small gift for their Advent Angel. This is not required by any means though. As a school we will sing Christmas carols in the gym from 12:15-12:45 PM. Parents are more than welcome to come. School will be dismissed at 1:10 PM for break.

Reading/Language Arts
This week the third grade read "Yonder Mountain-A Cherokee Legend" in which the chief of the tribe has to pick a new leader. Three young Native American men are given a task to see which one possesses the skills to be the next leader of the tribe. The comprehension skill covered comparing and contrasting. The vocabulary strategy focused on homophones and homographs. The students worked on contractions in phonics. For the grammar skill, the class worked on subject-verb agreement.

The lesson 12 weekly assessment results have been included in the take home folder. We will be in the reading series next week.

Science
The third grade class is learning about life cycles. Students have studied about plant life cycles. Students have learned about flowering and nonflowering plants. Pollination has also been discussed.
Math
The next chapter in math will focus on multiplication facts and strategies. We will start with the factors of 2 and 4, then 5 and 10.

Secret Holiday Sock Exchange
Third grade will have a holiday sock exchange during our class party on Friday, December 21st. If you would like your child to participate, please bring in a new pair of wrapped Christmas themed child-sized socks suitable for a boy or girl. Socks should cost $5 or less. We will play a fun game to exchange the holiday themed socks during our class party. If you have any questions, please feel free to call or email me.

Food Pantry Donations
Donations are wanted for our local food pantry. Third, fourth, and fifth grade students are asked to bring toilet paper. Donations can be brought to school through December 14th.

3rd Grade News

Math
Third graders continue to learn about multiplication. Students have built arrays to model multiplication number sentences. Students are also applying the Commutative Property (4x3=12, so 3x4=12) as a strategy to solve multiplication problems.

Reading/Language Arts
This week third grade is reading Tops and Bottoms. In this trickster tale, a clever Hare tricks a lazy bear. The hare plants the crops to "share" with the bear. The hare always ends up with the good parts, and the bear not so good parts. Bear learns a valuable lesson about working hard to reap the rewards you are wanting. The comprehension skill covered theme. The vocabulary strategy focused on idioms. The phonics skills covered homophones and words that end in -le and -er. Students used quotation marks in grammar.

The results of the Unit 2 Benchmark test and the lesson 11 weekly assessment have been included in the take home folder.

Science
The next unit third grade will cover is life cycles. Lessons will first focus on plant life cycles.

Reading Incentive Program
Eleven students met the reading goal for the month of November. Congratulations to Anthony, Charlie, Halle, Mark, Whisper, Savannah, Claire, Rohwyn, Will, Logan, and Zoey for meeting the goal of 400 minutes for the month. The total read for November was 6,180 minutes. Zoey read the most minutes in November with 1,010. December calendars have been sent home to keep track of minutes. The goal continues to be 400 minutes total.





Mass
The third grade class will lead the liturgy on Wednesday, December 12th. Parts have been included in the take home folder. Please practice speaking parts at home, so students can read their part fluently.

Math
Third grade is working on multiplication. Students are making equal groups, using a number line,  and using repeated addition.

Reading/Language Arts
This week third grade is reading "Technology Wins the Game." In this nonfiction text, students learn about how technology has changed sports games. The comprehension skill focused on sequencing. The phonics still covered vowel diphthongs -oi and -oy. Students worked on plural nouns in grammar. The vocabulary strategy focused on suffixes.

Results of the Unit 2 Benchmark assessment will be sent home next week.

Science
The class is in the process of finishing a unit on motion. There will be test next week over this topic.

Math
Students are finishing up chapter 2 about data and graphing. Students are taking a school wide survey to collect data. That data will be used to make different graphs.

Science
Third graders are continuing their study of motion. Student are learning about motion that occurs in pattern such as circular, back and forth, up and down, and zigzag. Students are also learning about unpredictable motion.

Reading/Language Arts
Students are reading a biography about Thomas Edison. The story primarily focuses on the childhood of Edison. Students worked on main idea and supporting details as the comprehension skill. The vocabulary strategy covered shades of meaning. Students identified the small differences in meaning between similar words and phrases. The class also worked on the short o sound with the letters au, aw, al, and o. The grammar skill focused on pronouns.

Students will be taking the Unit 2 Benchmark test on Monday, November 19th and Tuesday, November 20th.  As a class we will not move ahead in the reading series. There will be no spelling.

The results of the lesson 9 weekly assessment have been included in the take home folder. These are yours to keep.
Book Order
The book order sent home last week is due back to school by Friday, November 16th. If wanting to order as a Christmas gift, just let me know and I can keep them at school for pick up. Reading/Language Arts
This week third grade is reading the realistic fiction story called "Kamishibai Man." In this story an elderly Japanese man remembers how he used to ride his bicycle to town where he would tell stories to the children and sell them candies his wife made. Gradually fewer and fewer children came to listen due to the invention of the television. Years later, the man returns to find things have completely changed. In the end the man is surrounded by familiar faces. The children he used to entertain have returned as adults and eager to have their children listen to his stories. The comprehension skill covered cause and effect. The vocabulary skill focused on using a dictionary. The phonics skill worked on -ow and -ou sounds. In grammar students learned about abstract nouns.

Math
Third grade continues to work on analyzing and interpreting data. Students have been introduced to a line plot.

A review page for Chapter 2 has been included in the take home folder for extra practice in preparation for the test. This does not need returned to school.

Science
3rd grade students are now learning about motion. Students are learning about frame of reference, speed, and direction. Students are also applying what they learned about balanced and unbalanced forces to the concept of motion.

Veteran's Day Program
St. Malachy School will be hosting a Veteran's Day program on Friday, November 9th, at 2:00 PM. Students are encouraged to wear red, white, and blue clothing on this day. It is also a Spirit Day. Students can wear sweats for $1.

Book Order
A book order has been included in the take home folder. Orders can be returned to school by using cash or check (payable to Scholastic Book Club) or submitted online paying by credit card.  All orders need submitted by Friday, November 16th. Books make great Christmas gifts. If wanting to order books as gifts, just let me know and I can let you know when the orders arrived back to school.


Reading Incentive Program
Eleven students met the goal for the month of October in the reading incentive program. Congratulations to Charlie, Halle, Wyatt, Mark, Savannah, Claire, Rowhyn, Will, Logan, Zoey, and Merrick for meeting the goal. Claire read the most minutes with 1,130 total. The total minutes read in third grade this month was 6,2016. November calendars were sent home during conferences. The goal for November is 400 minutes total for the month.

Math
Third grader continue to interpret and analyze data. Students have read and made picture graphs. 

The chapter one tests were sent home for parents to view earlier this week. Students will continue to work on estimation, addition, and subtraction as the year continues.

Reading/Language Arts
This week third grade is reading a folktale called "The Harvest Birds" in which a young man has the desire to live off the land. The townspeople doubt his abilities, but Juan Zanate believes in himself. With the help of some "friends" Juan achieves his goal. The comprehension skill focused drawing conclusions. Students worked on context clue as a vocabulary strategy. The phonics skill covered the silent letters of wr- and kn-. The grammar skill worked on words in a series and using commas.

The lesson 7 weekly assessment has been included in the take home folder.

Next week (October 29th-November 1st), students will not be moving ahead in the reading series. Due to the shortened week and mass schedule change for the week, we will review comprehension skills and work on writing skills. 

Science
Students will have a test covering the topic of force on Friday, October 26th. The next unit of study for third grade is motion.

Hallo
ween

Halloween will be celebrated at St. Malachy during the afternoon of Wednesday, October 31st. Students will partake in activities put on by the Civics Club. The parade begins at 2:30 PM. Costumes need brought to school on this day. Students will have time to change into their costumes prior to the parade. Parents are welcome to come and watch the parade in the gym.

Reading Incentive Program
Please return October reading calendars by Monday, November 5th. November calendars will be sent home at next week. The goal for November is 400 minutes.

All Saints Mass
St. Malachy School will celebrate All Saints Mass on Thursday, November 1st. Mass will begin at 9:15 AM. There is no mass on Wednesday, October 31st.

Math
The next chapter in math will focus on representing and interpreting data. Students have worked with tally tables and frequency tables. I have had several parents ask how they can help their child at home with math. A handout has been included in the take home folder that offers suggestions. Any additional help with rounding, addition with regrouping, and  subtraction with regrouping would be of great benefit as well.

Reading/Language Arts
This week students are reading an informational text entitled "What Do Illustrators Do?" in which students learn about the job of an illustrator. The comprehension skill covered students identifying text and graphic features. Students learned about synonyms as the vocabulary skill. The phonics skill covered three letter clusters (scr, str, spr, and thr). Students worked on verb tense (present, past, and future) as the grammar skill.

The results of the lesson 6 weekly assessment have been included in the take home folder.

Science
As students continue to learn about force, students have been studying about electricity.
Mass
Third, fourth, and fifth grades will be leading the mass on Wednesday, October 24th. Parts have been included in the take home folder. Please note not everyone will have a part due to the number of students involved. Parts were chosen randomly by drawing sticks from the cups. There will be a doughnut and coffee reception following this mass for parents, grandparents, and special guests attending the mass.

Parent/teacher conference times have been set up for Tuesday, October 30th and Thursday, November 1st. Science
The class continues to learn about force. Students are studying magnetism. Students experimented with magnets.

Math
The next chapter in math will focus on representing and interpreting data. Students will organize data, use and make picture graphs, line plots, and bar graphs.

Please look for chapter one math tests to come home next week to be viewed and signed by a parent.

Reading/Language Arts
This week third grade is reading the narrative nonfiction selection called Bat Loves the Night in which readers learn about the night activity of bats. The comprehension skill covered sequence of events. The vocabulary skill focused on the suffixes of -able and -ible. Students learned about action and being verbs in grammar. The students played "Action Verb" charades to aid in their understanding of this skill. The phonics skill went over long and short vowels with the VCV pattern.

The results of the Unit 1 Benchmark test have been included in the take home folder. There are three sub tests that the students complete. The "Reading and Analyzing" section have students reading a passage and answering multiple choice comprehension and vocabulary questions. In the "Revising and Editing" section students are looking for changes in the way the sentences are written. The third section the students complete is "Reading Complex Text." In this test, students must write down their answers to comprehension questions about reading sections of a story. The benchmark tests show how well the students are understanding and using the skills and strategies taught in the previous lessons. The benchmark test is more difficult than the weekly assessments.

Schedule
St. Malachy School is in session on Friday, October 12th. The public school is not in session. There will not be any bus transportation this Friday. Please plan accordingly.

St. Malachy School is NOT in session on Monday, October 15th. Teachers will be attending professional development in Des Moines on this upcoming Monday.

A book order was sent home in last week's take home folder. All orders are due by Friday, October 12th.

Fluency
Another important aspect of reading is fluency. One of the components of the FAST testing given three times during the year assesses a student's ability to be fluent. Fluency is the ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression. Be a fluent reader is a skill we practice at school. I have included a handout in the take home folder pertaining to fluency. I have parents ask how they can help at home. The handout has suggestions for parents to use at home.

Reading/Language Arts
This week third grade has been taking the Unit 1 Benchmark test. These tests assess how well the students are applying the vocabulary, comprehension, phonics, and grammar skills that have been taught in the first five lessons. Please look for the results in next week's take home folder.

The lesson 5 weekly assessment scores have been included in the the take home folder.
Math
Third graders have been subtracting with regrouping using the standard algorithm. This can be a difficult concept for third graders. Any extra practice that can be provided at home would be beneficial to the students. 

Science
Students are learning about balance and unbalance forces. The class has also learned about the force of friction and gravity.

Book Order
A book order has been included in the take home folder. Orders can be submitted online at www.scholastic.com/bookclubs using the code GRHFQ or returned to school (checks made payable to Scholastic Book Clubs) by Friday, October 12th.

Mass

3rd Grade News

Science
Third grade students are starting a unit on force. Students have been learning about push and pulls. Students have studied about strong and weak forces and about the direction forces can move.

Math
Students in third grade are working on subtraction strategies. Students have been working on estimating differences and mental math subtraction strategies. Please continue to practice the basic subtraction facts at home.

Reading/Language Arts
Third grade read a biography this week about Roberto, Clemente, a baseball player from the Pittsburgh Pirates from the late 1950s through the early 1970s. The comprehension skill focused on cause and effect. The vocabulary strategy covered the prefix mis-. Students worked with long i as the phonics skill.  In grammar, students worked on singular and plural nouns.

The results of the lesson 4 weekly assessment have been included in this week's take home folder.

The FAST testing results have been included in the take home folder. These helps help determine students who need interventions, progress monitoring, and necessary support.

Next week, the third grade class will be taking the Unit 1 Benchmark Test. This assessment will test the vocabulary, comprehension, phonics, and grammar skills that have been taught in lessons one through five. These assessments show if students are applying the skills they have been taught. The class will also be learning about writing a personal narrative. 

Due to this test, we will not be moving ahead in the reading series next week. There  will be no spelling or weekly assessment given next week.

Coin Wars
Creston High School FBLA will once again be sponsoring "Coin Wars" to raise money for Union County Veterans to go on honor flights. Each class fills a jar with money from Monday, October 1-Friday, October 5th. There is a prize for the class that raises the most money.

"History of My Name" Family Interview

In next week's class meeting we are going to discuss the importance of our names. In your child's take home folder is an interview form that needs to be completed. Your child needs to ask a parent the questions listed on how he/she got his/her name. The 3rd grade students needs to be the one writing the answers on the paper. Students will discuss their answers at our class meeting on October 5th. Please have your child complete and return by Thursday, October 4th.

Reading Incentive Program
As stated in last week's blog, we will be starting the reading incentive program in October. A copy of the note and calendar have been included in today's take home folder. Please keep track of the number of minutes read each day and return at the end of each month.

Reading/Language Arts
This week the third grade class read the historical fiction story called Pop's Bridge. In this story, a young boy thinks his father the most important job in the process of building the Golden Gate Bridge. After an accident occurs, the boy realizes that each job the crew has are equally important to the completion of the project. The comprehension skill focused on compare and contrast. The vocabulary strategy was using word families. Students learned about common and proper nouns in grammar. The phonics skill covered long o with words with oa and ow.

The results of the lesson 4 weekly assessment have been included in this week's Thursday folder. These are yours to keep. The weekly assessments are taken on the Chromebooks. This assessment tests each child's understanding of the skills covered in class each week. Accommodations are made according to each student's abilities.

Math
Students continue to work on addition problems using a variety of strategies. Students have been using place value to solve problems. The class has also been taught the standard algorithm (regrouping process) for addition.  

Science
The third grade is finishing the first unit on Engineering. Students learned about the design process. To wrap up the chapter, students completed an online Egg Drop Challenge. Students designed a holder that would protect and egg from cracking when dropped. Students were given criteria and constraints to follow as they designed a solution to the problem. Homecoming
This is Homecoming week for the Creston Panthers. Friday is a $1 Spirit Day. Students need to wear their black and red to support the team. Due to the parade being moved up until 1:30 PM, St. Malachy dismisses at 12:40 PM. Lunch will be served earlier on this day. Third through fifth grade will have lunch from 11:45-12:10. Recess will be from 12:10-12:30 PM. Please notify the school of any changes to your child's schedule.


Reading Incentive Program
Students in kindergarten through fifth grade at St. Malachy School are going to be participating in a reading incentive program for the months of October through March.  The goal of the program is to get students reading at home and develop lifelong readers. Each month a calendar will be sent home with the students. Please keep track of the numbers of minutes read each day.  This can include what the child reads individually, and the reading parents and students do together. At the end of the month, please calculate the number of minutes read, sign, and return the calendar to school.  The goal in third grade for the months of October, November, and December is 400 total minutes for the month. The goal will increase in January, February, and March to 500 minutes. If your child meets the goal he or she can choose a gift certificate from Pizza Hut for a free personal pan pizza or a gift certificate from Pizza Ranch for $4 off a child’s buffet.  You will see a spot on each calendar to circle the option your child would like to have. The certificate your child receives can change from month to month if they would like. Certificates will be sent home in take home folders. Please return the calendar each month even if your child does not make the goal for the month. I will let the students know the total minutes read in third grade for each month. There will be an award for the student that reads the most minutes each month and for students who meet the goal in all six months. Calendars will be sent home in next week's take home folder.
