Silent Auction Item

Here is the third grade class quilt that will be in the silent auction at the St. Malachy Gala on March 5th. Thank you Rebecca Ide and Diane Ide for your work on this project.

Late Slips
The third trimester begins on Monday, February 29th.  Late slips will start for third grade.  A note has been sent home in the take home folder explaining the process of late slips.  There is also a tab on my blog that also explains it.  The process has been explained to the students. As I have told the students, the best way to avoid getting late slips is to complete work on time. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Parent/Teacher Conferences
Please sign up for a conference for your child.  Times are available on Tuesday, March 15th and Thursday, March 17th.  Please sign up using the following link.  

Reading Calendars
March calendars have been included in the take home folder.  Please return February calendars by Thursday, March 3rd.  The goal for March is 500 minutes.  The month of March will be the last month of the reading program.

Science
Third grade is preparing for a test over the solar system.  Students are completing the chapter review and study guide.  The test will be next week.

Math
Third grade has started working on division.  Students did a partner activity this week that focused on taking a total number of counters and figuring how many groups and the number in each group. Some students were relating their findings to multiplication.  Students will learn strategies for solving division problems

Overall the students did a great job on the Chapter 5 test.  Please continue to practice the basic multiplication facts to help with division.

Reading/Language Arts
Students this week are reading the informational text called "The Journey-Stories of Migration"by Cynthia Rylant.  Students are learning about whales and locusts migrating.  The comprehension skill covered compare and contrast.  Students identified similarities and differences in how and why each animal migrates.  The vocabulary skill focused on word roots.  The class continued to work on adverbs and adjectives that compare.  The phonics skill worked on spelling changes for words with -s, -es, -ed, and -ing.

The weekly assessment results from lesson 21 have been included in the take home folder.

3rd Grade News

Math
The next concept third grade will cover is division.  Students will learn about the size and number of equal groups.  Please continue to practice the basic facts at home.

Science
Students continue to learn about the solar system.  This past week focused on the moon.  Students learned about the phases and made models with Oreos.  Students will be taking the research they did using technology in library class and writing an informational report.

Reading/Language Arts
This week's story was a historical fiction selection entitled "Sarah, Plain and Tall."  The comprehension skill focused on the story structure of setting, characters, and plot.  Students worked on the prefix of non- as the vocabulary strategy.  In grammar students continued to work on adverbs. The phonics skill covered words ending in -ed and-ing.

The results of the Unit 4 Benchmark test have been included in the take home folder.  These tests assess how students apply the skills covered in class.  This time students also completed the "Reading Complex Text" section for practice.  Students completed the section on their own, then as we discussed and corrected the answers together students worked with a partner to see if their answers met the criteria given.  On the Unit 5 test, students will be give a score.

St. Malachy Gala and Auction
The St. Malachy Foundation will be hosting it annual dinner and auction on Saturday, March 5th. All money donated towards the "Fire Pit" basket will be given to Lacy Mullin on Friday, February 19th. Thank you to everyone who donated.  All donations are greatly appreciated.

Iowa Energy Game

Iowa Energy Field Trip

St. Malachy School had a great time watching the Iowa Energy beat the Winchester Knicks on Tuesday, February 9th.  Here are some pictures of the day.

Science
The class continues to learn about the solar system.  Students have been fascinated by the model of the sun and planets that is hanging from the ceiling of classroom. Students have also been researching a planet in library class.

Reading/Language Arts
This week third grade has completed the Unit 4 Benchmark test.  Please look for the results in next week's take home folder.  In addition, students have been writing opinion pieces about their favorite holiday.

The results for the lesson 20 weekly assessment have been included in the take home folder. 

Math
Third grade has been solving multiplication problems that multiply by multiples of ten (examples include 4 X 50 and 6 X 30).  Students have learned several strategies for solving these problems including the Distributive Property, place value, and the standard algorithm.  

Valentine's Day
Third grade will be having a Valentine's Day party on Friday, February 12th.  A class list was sent home last Thursday. If sending valentines, please send one for each classmate.

Late Slips
With the start of the third trimester of school at St. Malachy on Monday, February 29th, begins late slips for third grade.  A more detailed note explaining the process will be sent home at a later date.  I just want parents to be aware of when it begins.  Late slips will be explained in detail to the students. I have already been discussing the importance of turning in work on time and developing good study habits.

3rd Grade News

Math
Third grade is continuing to explore multiplication.  Students have been introduced to the vocabulary word equation.  Students are using strategies to find the unknown factor.  Students are also began using multiplication with multiple of ten.

Reading/Language Arts
This week's informational text "Life on the Ice" discussed the extremes of the Arctic and Antarctica. The comprehension skill focused on main idea and supporting details.  The vocabulary strategy focused on using a dictionary.  Compound words was covered in phonics.  Students identified adverbs, words that describe verbs, in grammar.

The results from the weekly assessment from lesson 19 have been included in the take home folder.

During the week of February 8th, students will be taking the Unit 4 Skills test.  We will not be moving ahead in the reading series.  There will be no spelling next week.

Science
As the class learns about the solar system, students were introduced to the vocabulary terms rotation and revolution.  Students learned about the Earth and moon's rotation and revolution.  Students have learned about the reason for the seasons and day and night.

Valentine's Day Party
Third grade will be having a Valentine's Day party on Friday, February 12th.  Students may bring valentine's day cards for their classmates beginning on the 10th.  A class list has been included in the take home folder.  If bringing valentines, please bring one for each child in the class.

Mass
Third grade is scheduled to be in charge of the mass this Wednesday, February 10th.  This is Ash Wednesday.  If your child has a part, it has been sent home in the take home folder.  Please practice speaking parts at home to improve fluency.  Parents are more than welcome to attend the liturgy.

Book Order
A book order was sent home last week in the take home folder.  All orders are due by Friday, February 5th.
Field Trip
The field trip for the Iowa Energy game is Tuesday, February 9th.  All permission slips for third grade have been returned to school.  Several students still owe the required fee to cover the cost of the ticket ($4) and the donation ($10) for the cost of the bus.  Please send to school prior to the field trip. Please wear your St. Malachy clothing (blue/gold) for the field trip.

Buses will back by 2:45 pm

*All students will ride on the bus to the event.
*Students may leave with their parents.  Students MUST check in with their teacher prior to leaving.
*School lunch is provided
*We will not be purchasing from the concession stands.
*Students should never be without an adult for any reason.  
*If you child is not riding the bus home please contact the office by Monday at 3pm to let the school know their travel arrangements.
Auction
Please remember that donations are still be accepted for the third grade "Backyard Fire Pit" basket and the class quilt.  Please make checks payable to Nicky Burg, and I will distribute to the volunteers. All donations are greatly appreciated.  The auction is on March 5th.

Reading Minutes
Ten students met the goal for the month of January. Total minutes read for the past month are 7,360 minutes.  Mila Kuhns read the most with 1,180 minutes total for the month.  Please continue reading. The goal for February is 500 minutes.  The program continues during February and March.
