Welcome to 3rd Grade
Another year of school is upon us. I hope your child is adjusting to third grade and all the changes that it brings. Third graders have been bringing home an assignment book. I know there have been no assignments in it, but I want students and parents to get into the habit of getting it signed each day. Students in third grade were also introduced to the flexible seating options. The flexible seating rules were discussed with the class. Each student signed a contract stating they would agree to follow the rules. I am sending a copy of the flexible seating rules home as well. Third grade students also tried cardio desk drumming as a brain break to get their bodies moving.

Please feel free to email or call me if you have any questions about your child and third grade. At this point everyone seems to be doing a great job.

Reading/Language Arts
Third grade will start in the Journey reading series beginning on Monday, August 30th. our reading series includes comprehension, grammar, phonics, spelling, and fluency.

Spelling will start next week. Students will take a pretest on Mondays and the post test on Fridays. After taking the pretest, students will be assigned to write each missed word three times each. This will be due on Tuesday. A spelling packet will also be given to the students on Monday. This is due by the following Friday. A note explaining this will also be sent home with the students next Monday.

Math
St. Malachy School is incorporating a new math series this year. Students in kindergarten through fifth grade will now be using Envision. Teachers will be learning right along with the students. This year third grade will be starting off with the topic of understanding multiplication and division of whole numbers. There is a parent letter in the take home folder explaining this.

One of the ways that third graders will be practicing the basic math facts is through and online program called XtraMath. There is a note in the take home folder about using this program at home as well.

Science
The first unit the students will cover includes learning about scientists and their contributions.

This week third grade students were also given a STEM challenge. The goal was to build the tallest and sturdiest tower using cups and popsicle sticks. In pairs, students brainstormed their ideas then created towers.

Car Line
Just a few reminders for parents that use the car line to pick their children up at the end of the day. Whoever is picking your child up needs to stay in the car. There are teachers on duty to help students getting in the car and shutting the door. Please feel free to pull up to Father's house and get out to help your child buckle their seat belt if necessary. Also, please do not pass other cars that are parked picking up their children in the line. We just don't want any accidents to occur.

If your child has a change in their afternoon pick up, please let the office and myself know. The end of the school can be chaotic, and we want all children to get to where they need to go with the correct transportation.

Picture Day
School pictures will be taken for kindergarten through eighth grade will take place on Thursday, September 2nd. A picture form has been included in the take home folder. Please return before picture day.
