3rd Grade News

Math
Students continue to work on multiplication strategies with multiples of 10. Students have used the Distributive Property and place value. Third grade will have a test over Chapter 5 next week.

Science
The third graders are studying about the solar system. Students have learned about the Earth is a sphere. Students are also learning about gravity.

Reading/Language Arts
This week third grade is reading the nonfiction selection "The Albertosaurus Mystery-Philip Currie's Hunt in the Badlands." Students learned about how fossil hunters use evidence to form conclusions. Phillip Currie had to use what Barnum Brown had discovered and recorded to help him prove that meat eating dinosaurs traveled and lived in groups. The comprehension skill covered drawing conclusions. Students continued to work with adjectives by adding -er, est, more, and most. Third graders also worked with words with the suffix of -ly as the vocabulary strategy. The phonics skill covered the the soft /c/ and soft /g/.

The lesson 16 weekly assessment results have been included in the take home folder.


Reading Incentive Calendars
January reading calendars are due back to school by Tuesday, February 4th. Please add up the minutes read and return the calendar if your child does not meet the goal. All minutes read can counts towards the whole class total. February calendars have been included in the take home folder.
Auction Items
A note was sent home a couple of weeks ago about the basket for the St. Malachy Foundation Gala that will be held on Saturday, February 29th. This year 2nd and 3rd grade are doing a "Southwest Iowa" basket. The basket is being created around supporting local businesses and showcasing all there is to do, visit, and explore in our area. Each family has been asked to donate $20 towards the purchase of items to build the basket or provide a gift certificate or favorite items. Please send the cash donation, gift certificate, or item to school by Friday, February 7th. If you have any questions, please contact Jenny Studer, Beth Knustrom, or Tiffany Johnson. All donations are greatly appreciated.

Next week Dustin Baird will be coming to the third grade class to take some pictures of the students to use for the silent auction item.

Math
Students continue to work on multiplication strategies. Student have identified the unknown factor in multiplication equations. Being fluent in the basic facts will help students with this skill. Please continue to practice the basic facts at home.

Reading/Language Arts
Third grade is continuing to read aloud "Judy Moody Saves the World" this week. Judy Moody is convinced she can change the world. She attempts to get her family to quit using products from the rain forest. Her family isn't ready to jump on board as much as Judy. The comprehension skill focused on story structure (setting, characters, and plot). The vocabulary skill focused on using context clues. The phonics skill covered words with air, ear, and are. Students were introduced to identifying adjectives in sentences. With the snow day last Friday and no school Monday, students will take the weekly assessment and spelling post test on Friday, January 24th.

The results of Unit 3 Benchmark test have been included in the take home folder.

Your child's FAST screening results have been included in the take home folder.
Science
The next unit third grade will focus on is the solar system.

Catholic Schools Week
Catholic Schools Week runs from Sunday, January 26th-Friday, January 31st. A schedule was sent home last week. Speaking parts for the mass on Sunday, January 26th and Friday, January 31st have been included in the take home folder. There is NO MASS on Wednesday, January 29th.

3rd Grade News

Math
Third grade will continue to work on multiplication in Chapter 5. Students will use the multiplication facts to describe patterns, find unknown facts,and using multiplication strategies with multiplies of 10.

Included in the take home folder is a copy of the first "timed" test that third graders took. I timed up, so I could see how long it took to complete the one hundred basic facts. Please continue to practice the basic facts at home. The timed tests let you know what basic facts need some additional practice.

Reading/Language Arts
This week third grade students took the Unit 3 Benchmark Test. Results will be sent home next week.

The results of the lesson 16 weekly assessment have been included in the take home folder.

The class also started lesson 16 in the reading series. The stories being read are "Judy Moody Saves the World" and "My Smelly Pet" written by Megan McDonald. The weekly assessment and spelling post test will be taken on Thursday, January 23rd.

Science
Third grade will have a test over plant and animal life cycles on Tuesday, January 21st. Please look for a study guide to come home on Friday.


S.O.S
This semester third grade will have a S.O.S (Student of Service) student in our classroom. This is a requirement for Creston High School seniors to graduate. Payton Burg will be in our classroom every other day.

Catholic Schools Week
This year's Catholic School Week runs from Sunday, January 26th-Friday, January 31st. A variety of faith filled fun activities are planned. On Sunday, January 26th, there is a student lead mass at Holy Spirit Church. Breakfast pizza will be served in the parish hall following mass. Each school day has been assigned a dress up day. On Monday, January 27th, students should wear their St. Malachy gear or blue/yellow. On this day, faculty and staff will be going out for lunch. Students need to bring a sack lunch (milk provided). Tuesday, January 28th, students should wear their PJs. Students may wear slippers as long as they have shoes to change into for recess. Students also may bring one extra item such as a pillow or stuffed animal. The talent show will also be on this day. One show will take place at 10:00 AM and another show will be at 1:00 PM. Students will only be in one show.
Wednesday, January 28th is Era day. Students can pick an era, any period in time, and dress like they did during that time. Students will get together with their Angel and make valentine cards for service men and women. There is NO mass on this Wednesday. Thursday, January 30th is workout day. The school will spend the day at the YMCA. Students will need swim suits and a towel as well. Students should also bring a sack lunch with a drink. Friday, January 31st is dress up day. The grandparents/special guest mass will take place at 1:30 PM at Holy Spirit Church. A cookies and punch reception will take place following the mass.

Third Grade News

Math
Students have been taught all of the math facts zero through ten. Please practice the basic facts at home. Third graders need to be fluent in the multiplication and division facts as well as addition and subtraction.

A review page has been included in the take home folder. The chapter 4 test will be on Monday, January 13th.

Science
3rd grade continues to learn about animal life cycles. Students have identified animals that go through a metamorphosis. Also, discussed have been animals that when born resemble their parents. Students are learning about inherited traits.

Reading/Language Arts
This week third grade is reading the humorous fiction selection "The Extra Good Sunday" by Beverly Cleary. Ramona and Beezus have to make supper for the family since they complained about the previous night's meal. The girls pull off the meal, but not without some issues and problems along the way. The comprehension skill was about understanding characters. Students identified trait, motivations, and feelings of Ramona and Beezus. The vocabulary skill involved students using a thesaurus. Students worked on vowels + /r/ words such as er, ir, ur, and or. Students also reviewed verb tenses.

Third grade will be taking the Unit 3 Benchmark test next week. We will begin the lesson 16 later in the week.

Next week, students will also do the winter screening of the FAST assessment. Please look for those results to come home at a later date.

Reading Incentive Program
Five students met the reading goal for December. Congratulations to Ryder, Brooklyn, Mason, Kynzlee, and Matthew for reaching the goal. The class read for a total of 2,817 minutes during December. Brooklyn read the most minutes with 955 total. January calendars were sent home last week. The goal for January, February, and March increases to 500 minutes.
