Reading/Language Arts
Third grade is reading "Roberto Clemente-Pride of the Pittsburgh Pirates." In this biography, students learn about the life of Roberto Clemente from a young, poor child growing up in Puerto Rico, to joining the major leagues as a Pittsburgh Pirate, and to hitting three thousand hits during his career. The comprehension skill covered cause and effect. Students identified singular and plural nouns as a grammar skill. The vocabulary skill focused on the prefix of mis-. The phonics skill covered long i words.

The results of the lesson 4 weekly assessment have been included in the take home folder.

Next week third grade will be taking the Unit 1 Benchmark test. This assessment will cover concepts learning in vocabulary, comprehension, and grammar over the first five lessons.
Science
3rd grade continues to learn about forces. Students have identified balanced and unbalance forces. Students have also identified types of forces such as friction and gravity.

Math
Students will take the chapter 1 test on Thursday, October 10th. The test covered addition and subtraction strategies. The next chapter will focus on representing and interpreting data.

Mindfulness
Mindfulness is the quality or state of being aware. It means paying full attention to something. It means slowing down to really notice what you're doing. The benefits of being mindful include improved attention, emotional regulation, greater compassion, and reduction of stress and anxiety. Mindfulness is a skill that takes time to develop. Starting this week, third graders have been participating in meditation and breathing exercises to help students be more mindful in the classroom. Students may bring a towel from home to use. Towels will be kept in the closet and sent home periodically to be washed.

A handout about "What is Mindfulness?" has been included in the take home folder.
