3rd Grade News

Reading/Language Arts
In this week's expository nonfiction selection "The Power of Magnets" students learn about magnets, their poles, electromagnets, and about examples. The comprehension skill focused on cause/effect and summarizing. Students learned about contractions in grammar. The vocabulary strategy covered homophones and homographs. In phonics students worked on words with double consonants.

The lesson 26 test results have been included in the take home folder.

Math
Third grade continues to learn about fractions. Students have worked on relating whole numbers and fractions, fractions of a group, and finding part of a group using unit fractions,. Students will have a test towards the end of next week over fractions.

Science
Students are creating simple machine posters to show their understanding of the concept. Pictures to come once the research and projects are finished.

May Day Baskets
Third graders will be making May Day baskets on Tuesday, May 1st. Popcorn for the baskets will be provided. Students may bring one small piece of individually wrapped candy (Jolly, Rancher, Starburst, gum, etc.) to be put in each of their classmates cups. 
Biography Book Reports
Biography book report projects are due Friday, May 4th. I hope everyone has been diligently working on them. Please have your child practice his or her presentation beforehand.  I look forward to hearing about all the individuals read about and seeing the projects.
Mass
3rd grade and 7th grade are in charge of the mass on Wednesday, May 2nd. If your child has a part it has been included in the the take home folder. We will be practicing at school, but please practice parts at home before next Wednesday.

Lap-A-Thon
Lap-A-Thon is scheduled for Thursday, May 3rd. Third, fourth, and fifth grade will do lap from 10:00-11:00 AM. Students may dress comfortably (sweats) for running/walking outside. If wet, please have your child bring an additional pair of socks and shoes to change into afterwards.

3rd Grade News

Science
The third grade class is continuing to learn about force. In pairs the students constructed bridges to see how many pennies they would hold. Students used their knowledge of force in their designs.  After making bridge #1, students had a change at a redesign in making bridge #2 using what they learned from their first attempt. There will be pictures and videos coming.

Math
The class continue to learn about fractions. Students have learned about the names of equal parts of a whole, equal shares, unit fractions, and fractions of a whole.

Reading/Language Arts
This week students are reading the nonfiction narrative "The Foot Race Across America." This story followed runner Andy Payne as he completed a foot race from San Francisco to New York. The comprehension skill covered main idea and supporting details and analyzing and evaluating a story. The vocabulary strategy focused on the suffix -ion. Students were learning about abbreviations in grammar. The phonics skill covered the final syllables of -tion, -sion, and -ture.

Earth Day Clean Up
St. Malachy School will be doing their annual clean up on Friday, April 20th.  Third grade students will be raking along fences and buildings. Each third grader needs to bring rake and work gloves. Students may wear sweats on this day since we will be working outside. Friday, April 20th is a spirit hat day for $1. All students are asked to donate an additional $1 to cover the purchase of flower pots, soil, and flowers for the front entrance of the school.

Book Order
The book order is due back to school by Friday, April 20th. Please send cash or check (made payable to Scholastic) or submit online at Scholastic Book Clubs. One more book order will be sent home in May.
Biography Book Reports
The biography book report due date is quickly approaching. Projects are due back on Friday, May 4th. Please let me know if you have any questions. The Biography Bash is Friday, May 11th at 2:15 PM in the gymnasium.

Reading/Language Arts
The Unit 5 Benchmark test results scores have been included in the take home folder. This copy is yours to keep.

Next week the third grade class will resume the reading series with lesson 26.

Science
Students are learning about force. The class has learned about motion, speed, and work.


Math
The next unit of study for third grade is fractions. Students will identify, read, and write fractions.

Book Order
An April book order has been included in the take home folder. It is due by Friday, April 20th. Orders can be submitted online at Scholastic Book Club using the code GRWrG or returned to school by cash or check (payable to Scholastic Book Clubs).

Biography Book Reports
Information about the biography book report projects was sent home last week. Your child received a packet last Thursday along with biography that was picked out. Please let me know if you have any questions. Projects are due Friday, May 4th. The Biography Bash for students to show off their projects is on Friday, May 11th beginning at 2:15 PM.

3rd Grade News

Science
The next unit the third grade will study is force and motion. 

Reading/Language Arts
This week third grade has been taking the Unit 5 Benchmark assessment. Please look for the results in next week's folder. Next week third grade will be taking Iowa Assessments next week, so the class will not be moving ahead in the reading series.

The class has also been reading Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl. In this chapter book, a clever fox outwits three farmers.

The lesson 25 weekly assessment results have been included in this week's take home folder.

Math
Third grade will have a math test on Monday, March 9th over chapter 7 covering division. A review sheet has been included in the take home folder.


Reading Incentive Program
For the month of March, three students met the goal. Total minutes read was 3,493. Sadie read the most minutes with 2,075 total. Melanie, Taylor, and Sadie met the goal for March.  Congrats to Melanie and Sadie for meet the goal in all six months.

Iowa Assessments
St. Malachy School will be taking Iowa Assessments during the mornings of Monday, April 9th-Friday-Friday, April 13th. The PTO will be providing treats for the students for the students during the week. Students will need #2 pencils. No mechanical pencils will be allowed on the tests.

Biography Book Reports
Information packets are being sent home with each third grade student about a biography book report. Each student has chosen a biography to read. Students need to read the book, fill out the report form, and create on of the project ideas. Projects are due Friday, May 4th. Please let me know if you have any questions about this project.
