3rd Grade News

Spring Clean Up
St. Malachy will be having its annual clean up day on Friday, April 26th. Students in third through eighth grade need to bring rakes. Please make sure the rake is labeled with your child's name. Students should wear clothes that can get dirty. A $1 donation is also being requested from each student. This will go towards pots, soil, and flowers for the front entrance. Since students can already wear sweats, Friday is a $1 Hat Spirit Day.

Lap-A-Thon
Lap-a-Thon will be held on Thursday, May 2nd. Third, fourth, and fifth grade students will be lapping from 10:00-11:00 AM. Students may bring a water bottle to have outside when they are running. Students may also bring an electronic and headphones for listening to music as they lap. Please remember to return the donation envelopes to school.

Field Trip
Second and third grade students will be taking a field trip to Living History Farms on Tuesday, May 14th. Cost of the field trip is $13.25 per child. If writing a check, please make payable to Janet Meisenheimer. Students will also need to bring a sack lunch on this day. We are asking students wear his/her St. Malachy attire on this day. Parents are welcome to attend and ride the bus if he/she would like to. The cost is $15.00 per adult.  A note pertaining to the field trip has been included in the take home folder. Please return the permission slip and fee to school by Friday, May 10th. If you have any questions, please feel free to email or call.

Biography Book Report Projects
Projects are due on Wednesday, May 8th. Hopefully students have a good start to the book he/she is reading. Like I told the students, this is not a project that can be completed over night. The Biography Bash for parents to come and view all of the projects is on Wednesday, May 15th at 10:30 AM.

Third Grade News

Math
Students are learning about fractions. The class has made equal shares, identified unit fractions and fractions of a whole, and ordered fractions fractions on a number line.

Please continue to practice the basic facts at home. Students who haven't passed the multiplication and division fluency tests will be taking them again next week.

Science
Third grade students are studying weather in science class. Students have been learning about how weather is measured.

Reading/Language Arts
Students read the informational text "Mountains-Surviving on Mt. Everest" this week. The story informed readers about Temba Tsheri, the youngest person to climb the mountain. It also gave facts about Mt. Everest. The comprehension skill covered using text and graphic features to better understand the text. The vocabulary strategy focused on analogies. Students reviewed adjectives and adverbs that compare in grammar. For the phonics skill, students worked with the suffixes -able, -less, and -ness.

On Thursday, April 25th and Friday, April 26th, students will be taking the Unit 5 Benchmark test.

NCEA Convention
From Monday, April 22nd through Wednesday, April 24th, St. Malachy teachers will be attending NCEA (National Catholic Education Association) National Convention and Expo in Chicago, IL as to further their professional development. There is no school at St. Malachy on these days.

Biography Bool Report Projects
Last week information was sent home with the students about a biography book report project. Hopefully students have started reading the biography book that they picked out. Projects are due on Wednesday, May 8th. Third grade will hold the Biography Bash on Wednesday, May 15th at 10:30 AM. Parents are welcome to attend.

3rd Grade News

Reading/Language Arts
The results of the lesson 24 weekly assessment have been included in your child's take home folder.

Next week (April 15th-18th), third grade will be completing lesson 25. All testing for the week will take place on Thursday, April 18th, due to no school on Friday, April 19th.

There in no school on Monday, April 22nd, Tuesday, April 23rd, or Wednesday, April 24th, due to teachers being in Chicago at the NCEA for professional development. Upon returning to school, students will take the Unit 5 Benchmark test on Thursday, April 25th and Friday, April 26th.

Math
Students are studying fractions in math. Students have identified if parts are equal or unequal and identified the name of the parts of the whole(halves. thirds, fourths, etc).

Easter Activities
On Thursday, April 18th, St. Malachy School will have the Sedar Meal.  Following the meal, students and staff will participate in the Crosswalk. Students are asked to wear a plain white shirt on this day. A picture of the student body will be taken at the church. There is no school on Friday, April 19th to observe Good Friday.

Biography Book Report Project
Third grade students will be completing book report project at home. All of the information was discussed in class with your child. All necessary paperwork and the selected book were sent home on Wednesday with the students. The project is due on Wednesday, May 8th. Students will present to the class on the 8th. 9th, and 10th of this week. Third grade will host a Biography Bash on Wednesday, April 15th at 10:30 AM following the third and seventh grade mass. Students will share their projects during this time. Parents, grandparents, and special guests are all invited. Please let me know if you have any questions.

3rd Grade News

Math
Third grade students will be taking the chapter 7 division test on Friday, April 4th. The next concept third grade will cover will be fractions. Students will identify, read, and write fractions.

Reading/Language Arts
Students are reading the realistic fiction story called "Dog of the Sea Waves." Brothers discover the Hawaiian Islands. While they are there, one of the brothers rescues a seal. The brothers have to leave and head home. During their journey they encounter heavy waves of water and one of the brothers is pulled under. The seal rescues the brother. The comprehension skill focused on author's purpose. Students identified and used prefixes in phonics. The grammar skill focused on complex sentences. The vocabulary strategy covered shades of meaning in words.

The lesson 23 weekly assessment results have been included in the take home folder.

Science
Third grade is preparing for the Unit 5 test covering organisms and their environment. Students will complete a study guide on Friday. The test will be on Tuesday, April 9th since I will be away from school on Monday.


Reading Incentive Program
Congratulations to Zoey, Claire, Halle, Mark, Charlie, and Logan for meeting the reading goal in March. Claire read the most minutes with 1,260 total. The class read 4,434 minutes for the month of March.

                              

Congratulations to Halle, Charlie, Mark, Claire, and Zoey for meeting the goal in all six months of the reading incentive program that went from October through March. Claire read the most minutes, and Zoey was the runner up.

                                               


Iowa Assessments
St. Malachy students will be taking Iowa Assessments next week. Iowa Assessments measure student achievement and growth. Third grade will taking the tests Tuesday through Friday (April 9th-12th) during the morning. I will be away from school on Monday. Students needs to get a good night's sleep. Also, students should eat a good breakfast each morning. A light snack will also be given to the students during the testing time. Students need to use #2 pencils. Mechanical pencils may not be used.
Book Order
A book order has been included in the take home folder. All orders are due by Friday, April 12th. Orders may be submitted online by using a credit card. Orders may also be returned to school by cash or check (payable to Scholastic Book Clubs).

Food Pantry Donations
St. Malachy School is seeking donations for the Creston Food Pantry during this Lenten season. Items in need include things for babies such as diapers, wipes, and bath wash. Also need are personal items for adults such as toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, bath wash, and soap. All items need brought to school by Friday, April 12th.
