When Uncle Ray says he can't come due to work, he builds a wooden figure in hopes that travelers will pick up it and take him along, and then write letters back to Uncle Ray telling them where each took the figure on his destination to hopefully make it to California. The reader follows Oliver's journey through each letter that was written by who picked him up. The comprehension skill focused on sequencing.
