3rd Grade News

Reading/Language Arts
The results of the Unit 6 Benchmark have been included in the take home folder.

Math
Results from the Beginning of the Year math test and the End of the Year Math test have been included in the take home folder.


Circus Ticket
Each third grade student has a ticket for admission to the circus that will be in Creston on Friday, June 1st. Please look in the take home folder for this ticket.

Take Home Folders
Take home folders do not need returned back to school. These are yours to keep.


Spelling Bee
3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students participated in a spelling bee today. Each class has a grade level contest to get 2 contestants. Those six students then competed in the finals. Third grade students who qualified include Baret Lane and Jonny Acuna. 4th grade students were Gabe Blazek and Braylee Pokorny. The 5th grade students included Jersey Foote and Parker Varner. Congratulations to Parker for winning and qualifying for the spelling bee at the Iowa State Fair in August! Gabe was the runner up.




Last Day of School
The last day of school is scheduled for Friday, June 1st. There will be mass at 9:15 AM. Students do not have to dress up. Regular day dress code is appropriate. The lap-a-thon and middle school awards will follow mass around 10:00 AM. Students need to bring a sack lunch on the last day of school. Milk will be provided by the school. The 8th grade Clap Out will take place at 1:00 PM. School dismisses at 1:10 PM for summer break.

Thank You
A big thank you to all of the third grade parents for a wonderful school year. I have enjoyed watching each student make strides academically and socially. I hope everyone has a safe, fun, and relaxing summer break. Please take some time for your child to read, practice math facts, or do anything school related throughout the summer. I look forward to seeing the third grade students as fourth grade students in August when school resumes.

3rd Grade News

Science
Students are learning about famous scientists and their contributions. Students will study Isaac Newton, Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, Galileo Galilei.

Math
Students are ending the year studying geometry. Students are studying plane figures. The class has learned about polygons. Students specifically studied quadrilaterals and triangles.

Students will take an end of the year math test on Friday, May 25th.

A packet of math worksheets has been included in the take home folder. These are extra pages in our math workbooks. They are extra work your child can do during the summer.

Reading/Language Arts
Students took the Unit 6 Benchmark test this past week. Please look for the results in next week's take home folder.

Results of the FAST screening given during the fall, winter, and spring have been included in the take home folder. 

Field Day
Field Day activities will take place from 1:00-2:45 PM on Thursday, May 31st. Students need to wear tennis shoes for the planned activities. 

Last Day of School
The last day of school is scheduled for Friday, June 1st. There will be mass at 9:15 AM. Students do not have to dress up. Regular day dress code is acceptable. After mass there will be middle school and lap-a-thon awards given out. Students do need to bring a sack lunch for the last day of school. Milk will be provided by the school. The 8th grade clap out will take place at 1:00 PM followed by a 1:10 PM dismissal for summer break.

Field Trip

The St. Malachy 2nd and 3rd grade classes took a field trip to Fort Des Moines Park to observe and interact with habitats. Students took a hike through the woodlands and discovered living things in the pond. It was a great day for discovery Here are a few pictures of the day.

3rd Grade News

Reading/Language Arts
The class is reading a realistic fiction selection called "Saving Buster." In this story, a service dog is injured after getting hit by a car. The dog needs surgery, but the owners are not able to afford it. The young neighbor boy, Donovan, comes up with a way to help the family raise money. The comprehension skill focused on conclusions and questioning. Students worked on compound words as the vocabulary strategy. The phonics skill covered the schwa sound. The grammar skill reviewed pronouns.

The lesson 29 weekly assessment results have been included in the take home folder.

During the week of May 21st, there will be an end of the year spelling test. One word from each list will be on the list, so there will be thirty words.

Students will also be taking the Unit 6 Benchmark test next week.

Math
The class is working on measurement. Students are using rulers to measure to the nearest inch, 1/2 inch, and 1/4 inch.

Science
Students continue to study healthy habits in class. Students are learning about nails and hair.

Book Order
A book order was sent home in last week's take home folder. Orders are due back by Friday, May 18th.

 Last Week Of School
There is no school on Monday, May 28th due to Memorial Day. There is no mass on Wednesday, May 30th. Field Day activities will take place during the afternoon of Thursday, May 31st. The last day of school is scheduled for Friday, June 1st. Mass is scheduled for 9:15 AM on this day. We will be doing the 8th grade Clap Out at 1:00 PM and school dismisses at 1:10 PM for summer break.

Science
Third grade will be studying healthy habits. Specifically students will be studying skin, hair, and nails.


Math
The class is learning about time. Students have calculated time to the minute, AM and PM, and elapsed time.

Reading/Language Arts
This week students read the play "A New Team of Heroes." In this selection, a team of soccer plays learn about teamwork and accepting a new player. The comprehension skill covered analyzing characters. The vocabulary strategy focused on the prefix of un- and dis-. Students worked on prepositions in grammar. The phonics skill stressed words that end in -er and -le.

The lesson 28 weekly assessment results have been included in the take home folder.

Biography Bash
Family, friends, staff, and students are hosting a Biography Bash on Friday, May 11th from 2:15-3:00 PM in the school gym. 3rd grade will be sharing their biography projects and their knowledge.

Field Trip
Second and third grade will be going on a field trip to Fort Des Moines Park on Tuesday, May 15th. Please return the permission slip and $5 public transportation fee if you still have not done so. Students will need a sack lunch with a drink. Electronics can be brought for the bus ride to and from Des Moines. Students will not be allowed to use social media. Students should be dressed for outdoor weather. Jenny Purdum and Molly Kilborn will be the parents chaperoning the field trip.

Lap-A-Thon 2018

3rd Grade News

Math
The next chapter in math will focus on time and measurement. Students will be telling time to the nearest minute and calculating elapsed time. Students will also be studying measurement.

Science
Students did a great job creating simple machine posters. Pictures were posted to the third grade Facebook page. The third grade class will have a test covering force next week.

Reading/Language Arts
This week students read the biography "Becoming ANYTHING He Wants to Be" in which students learn about a blind man that has been able achieve many accomplishments such as climbing the seven summits, running marathons, skiing, and tandem biking riding to name a few. Students worked on fact and opinions and visualizing as the comprehension skills. The vocabulary strategy covered. Students worked on the -augh and -ough sounds in phonics. The grammar skill centered on using commas.

The lesson 27 weekly assessments have been included in the take home folder for your viewing.


Biography Book Report Projects
Biography book report projects are due on Friday, May 4th. Students need to return the book read, the report form filled out, and the project to school. Students will give their presentation on this day. The Biography Bash is on Friday, May 11th at 2:15 PM in the gym for parents, grandparents, students, and staff to come and see the projects and ask questions of the students.

Field Trip
Information pertaining to a field trip for 2nd and 3rd grades has been sent home in the take home folder. These two classes will be going to Fort Des Moines Park on Tuesday, May 15th for a Habitat Discovery field trip. Two third grade parents are needed to chaperone the field trip.  Chaperones will need to ride the bus with the students. A sign up genius will be emailed at noon on Monday, May 7th to sign up to chaperone. Students will need a sack lunch with a drink. Five dollars is also needed to cover the cost of the public school bus transportation. Please return the signed permission slip and $5 to school by Friday, May 11th.
