Third Grade News

Reading/Language Arts
This week third grade is reading the nonfiction selection "Aero and Officer Mike-Police Partners." Students learned about a police officer and his K-9 dog partner. The comprehension skill focused on author's purpose. Students worked on pronoun-verb agreement as the grammar skill. The vocabulary skill covered the prefixes of im- and -in. The phonics skill reviewed the words with ar, or, and ore.

The lesson 13 and lesson 14 assessments are being sent home with your child today.

Science
Students are learning about animal life cycles. Students have sequenced the stages.

Math
Students continue to learn the multiplication. Students were taught the Associative Property of Multiplication. The property states that the product will remain the same regardless of the grouping (3 X 4) X 2=3 X (4 X 2). Students also looked at patterns when multiplying.


Reading Calendars
Please continue to track reading minutes during the month of December. Calendars are due back by Friday, January 3, 2020. January calendars will be sent home after returning from break. The goal for January will increase to 500 minutes.

3rd Grade News

Reading/Language Arts
This week third grade students are reading "Yonder Mountain-A Cherokee Legend." In this story, Chief Sky has to pick someone to lead the tribe since he is unable to do the job. He choose three young men to complete a task to see who follows directions. The comprehension skill covered compare and contrast. The vocabulary skill focused on homophones and homographs. Students worked with contractions as the phonics skill. The grammar skill covered subject and verb tense.

The lesson 12 weekly assessment results have been included in the take home folder.
Math
Third grade continues to work on solving multiplication facts. This week students have learned the factors of 3, 6, and 7. Students have also been taught how to solve problems using the Distributive Property (multiplying a sum by a number is the same as multiplying each addend by the number then adding the products).

Please practice the basic multiplication facts at home.

Science
Students are learning aboutt life cycles. The class has learned about the life cycle of flowering plants and non-flowering plants.


Food Pantry Donations
St. Malachy School is still seeking donations for the food pantry. Items to be donated include personal care items such as shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothpaste, deodorant, bar soap, etc. Please bring items by Friday, December 13th.


Dress Up Days
Get into the holiday spirit next week with St. Malachy dress up days. On Monday, wear red. On Tuesday, wear green. Students need to wear mass clothes on Wednesday.  On Thursday, students can wear ugly sweaters.
School Christmas Party
Third grade will be having a classroom party during the afternoon Thursday, December 19th. Everyone in the school is invited to wear ugly sweaters or dress in Christmas colors. Students will be eating lunch with their Advent Angels on this day. Students should bring a sack lunch from home. Sometimes Advent Angels bring gifts for each other. This is completely up to you. Please know this is not required. The whole school will be singing Christmas carols in the gym from 12:15-12:45 PM. During the afternoon, third grade will have a secret sock exchange, enjoy treats, and watch a holiday movie.

There is no school on Friday, December 20th. Teachers have professional development on this day.


School Supplies
Please check with your child on their school supplies. I have noticed some of the students are running low. Some ideas for stocking stuffers might include a new box of crayons, glue sticks, or pencils.

Science
Third grade will have a test over motion on this Thursday. The next unit the students will studying living things.

Reading/Language Arts
This week the third grade students are reading Tops and Bottoms. In this trickster tale, the clever Hare tricks the lazy Bear into being business partners. Hare tricks Bear three times before Bear decides to do the work himself. The comprehension skill focused on theme. Students studied and identified homophone and words ending in -er and -le. as the phonics skill. The vocabulary skill covered idioms. Student worked with quotations in grammar.

The results of the lesson 11 weekly assessment have been included in the take home folder.
Math
Students will continue to work on multiplication in math. Chapter 4 will focus on each of the single digit factors. This week students have covered 2, 4, 5, and 10. Please practice multiplication facts at home.


Food Pantry Donations
St. Malachy School is taking donations of personal care items to donate to the local food pantry. Items to be brought can include shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothpaste, deodorant, and bar soap.

Mass
3rd grade is scheduled to lead the mass on Wednesday, December 11th. Parts have been included in the take home folder. Please practice the parts at home to improve fluency.

Book Order
A book order has been included in the take home folder. Orders are due by Friday, December 13th. Books make wonderful presents. If wanting to order as Christmas gifts, please let me know, and I will let you know when the order arrives back to school.

Acts of Kindness
Another acts of kindness recording sheet has been included in the take home folder. Please return the one from this week.

Ugly Christmas Sweater
Decorated ugly sweaters are due back to school by Wednesday, December 11th. I will post a picture next week of each student's creation. They will then be hung on the wall.

December Information for Parents

Information for Parents
I hope everyone has wonderful Thanksgiving break with family friends. Just a couple of notes for parents when we get back to school next week. Things will be very busy during the month of December. Please return November reading calendars by Tuesday, December 3rd. Pizza certificates will be sent home on that day. December calendars are coming home with students today. Also, St. Malachy School is collecting personal care items (toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo/conditioner, body wash, and bar soap) for the food pantry. Donations can be brought to school December 2nd-13th. 

Advent Angels will be meeting during the month of December. These are special activities for older and younger students to get together and talk about faith and help build friendships.

Math
Third graders continue to learn about the process of division. Students have made arrays and identified the Commutative Property of Multiplication (3 X 4 = 4 X 3). Students should be practicing basic multiplication facts at home. There will be a test over chapter 3 the week after Thanksgiving.

Science
Third grade continues to learn about motion. Students have learned about patterns in motion.

Reading/Language Arts
This week students took the Unit 2 Benchmark Assessment on Monday and Tuesday. Please look for the results in today's take home folder.

From Wednesday, November 20th through Tuesday, November 26th, students are working on lesson 11. The story students are reading the informational text Technology Wins the Game. The comprehension skill covered sequencing and text and graphic features. Students identified more plural nouns in grammar. The phonics skill covered the vowel diphthongs oi and oy. Students also worked with suffixes -less, -ful, and -ous.


Absent
I will be away from school on Friday, November 22nd on sick leave. My husband is having nasal surgery. On Monday, November 25th, I will be attending day two of the phonological awareness and word recognition class.

Thanksgiving Break

Science
The next chapter third grade will cover is motion. Students have been learning about position, frame of reference, and speed.

Math
Chapter 3 in math will focus on process of multiplication. Students will making equal groups, relate addition to multiplication, and skip count on a number line.
Reading/Language Arts
This week third grade is reading a biography called Young Thomas Edison. This story focuses on Thomas Edison and his early life. The comprehension skill covered main idea and supporting details. The vocabulary skill had students discovering shades of meanings of words. Students worked on the short o sound made by o, aw, al, and as the phonics skill. The grammar skill identified pronouns.

The lesson 9 weekly assessment results have been included in the take home folder.

Students will be taking the Unit 2 Benchmark assessment on Monday, November 18th and Tuesday, November 19th. The class will work on lesson 11 on Wednesday, November 20th through Tuesday, November 26th.


Art
St. Malachy School will a Resident Artists, Pam Dennis and Ryk Weiss, visiting Tuesday, November 19, through Thursday, November 21st. 3rd grade will have their turn on Wednesday, November 20th at 1:00 PM. Each grade will complete a part of a mural. The finished piece will have outside of Mrs. Stoner's classroom.

Bubba Sorensen will also be visiting the third grade class during the afternoon of Wednesday, November 20th. Students will need to bring a paint shirt on this day.

Reading Incentive Program
Totals are in for the month of October. Congratulations to Ryder, Brooklyn, Mason, and Matthew for meeting the goal of 400 minutes during the month of October. Five students turned in their calendars. The total minutes read during the month was 2,809 minutes. Brooklyn read the most minutes with 1,020 total read. Keep reading and tracking minutes for the month of November.

Veteran's Day Assembly
St. Malachy School will be having a Veteran's Day program on Monday, November 11th at 10:00 AM. Students are encourage to wear read, white, and blue clothing to school. Parents are invited to attend.

Reading/Language Arts
This week third grade read a folktale entitled The Harvest Birds. In this selection, Juan wants to farm, but isn't left any land by his father. The townspeople don't believe Juan is capable of having crops grow. With the help of the oldest man in town and the zanate birds, Juan proves he is able to grow crops on small patch of land. The comprehension skill covered drawing conclusions. Students also reviewed silent letters as the phonics skill. The vocabulary skill focused figuring out the meaning of words using context clues. The grammar skill covered using commas in sentences.

The lessons 6 and 7 weekly assessment results have been included in the take home folder.
Math
Students continue to learn about different types of graphs. This week students used how to use a line plot to graph data.

A review page is being sent home in the take home folder for Chapter 2. Please complete at your convenience. There will be a test on Monday, November 4th.

Next week the class will be taking a school wide survey. The 3rd grade students will collect data, analyze the data, and create a graph to share the data collected.
Science
Students are reviewing their knowledge of force. Students have completed a unit review and a study guide. There will be a test over the topic on Friday, November 1st.

Mass
Mass will be celebrated at school on Friday, November 1st this week in recognition of All Saint's Day. Students do need to dress up following mass dress code.
Reading Incentive Program
October calendars are due back to school by Monday, November 4th. Even if your child does not meet the goal, please return the calendar to school. Pizza certificates will be sent home on November 4th. November calendars have been included in the take home folder.

Reading/Language Arts
This week third grade read the informational text What Do Illustrators Do? The reader learned about the steps that an illustrator takes when completing a book. The comprehension skill covered using graphic sources (tables, charts, bold or italicized text, captions, labels, speech bubbles, etc). Students identified verb tense (present, past, future) in grammar. The vocabulary skill focused on synonyms. The phonics skill reviewed three letter clusters (spr-, str-, thr-, and scr-).

The results of the lesson 6 weekly assessment have been included in the take home folder.

Science
Students continue to learn about force. The class has studied about electricity and static electricity.

Math
Students continue to work with data and graphs. Students have read, interpreted, and made bar graphs.

Halloween Activities
St. Malachy School will be celebrating Halloween during the afternoon of Thursday, October 31st. The Civics Club will be having activities for the students to participate in. We will then have treats prior to the parade. Costumes should be brought to school on this day. Students will have time to change before the parade. Students are responsible for getting themselves ready. The parade will be at 2:30 PM. Parents are more than welcome to come and watch the parade in the gym.

October reading calendars are due back to school by Monday, November 4th. Pizza certificates will be sent home then. Please make sure reading calendars are completely filled out. I am looking forward to seeing all those minutes coming in. November calendars will be sent home in next week's take home folder.

Author/Illustrator Visit
On Tuesday, November 5th, St. Malachy School will have author Julie Dueker and illustrator Bubba Sorensen visiting to share their book Because Of You Old Glory Flies. Students have the opportunity to preorder a copy of the book. Both author and illustrator will autograph all preordered books for the students. The order form and money are due back to school by Friday, November 1st.

3rd Grade News

Science
Students have learned about the forces of friction and gravity. Students are also learning about magnetism.

Math
Third grade has started chapter 2. Students have organized data from a tally table to a frequency table. The class has also read, interpreted, and made picture graphs. Students are using a key when reading a picture graph.

Reading/Language Arts
The beginning part of the week was spent completing the Unit 1 Benchmark test. There are two sections to the this test. The "Reading and Analyzing" section tests the students comprehension over unfamiliar texts. The second section of the test is "Revising and Editing" where students look for mistakes in the way sentences are written and need changed. These tests require students to read and comprehend what was read. They are not tests that can be completed quickly. The results have been included in the take home folder. 

Students were also introduced to another form of writing. Students have wrote descriptive paragraphs and personal narratives. This week students wrote opinion paragraphs. Students wrote about whether they would rather have a dog or a cat as a pet, and would they rather have it be hot and swim in a pool or be cold and ski down a mountain. We will continue to write opinion pieces.

We have started lesson 6 in the reading series. Students are reading the narrative nonfiction story "Bat Loves The Night." The comprehension skill covered sequencing. The vocabulary skill covered the suffixes of -able and -ible. Students worked with verbs in grammar. The phonics skill focused on words with VCV pattern. This week's spelling packet will be due on Monday, October 21st. That is when the lesson 6 post test and weekly assessment will be. We will also take the lesson 7 pretest on this day. A new packet will be sent home Monday that is due next Thursday, October 24th.

Included in the take home folder are the results of last week's lesson five week assessment and the Unit 1 Benchmark results.

Mass
Third, fourth, and fifth grade will be leading the mass on Wednesday, October 23rd. Parts have been included in the take home folder. Following the mass on this day, there will be a coffee and donut reception for guests of students in third, fourth, and fifth grade.

Spaghetti Supper
The St. Malachy PTO is hosting their annual spaghetti supper on Saturday, October 19th. The meal is $8 for those 8 years and above and $5 for children between five through seven. The meal includes pasta, bread stick, vegetable side, salad, dessert, and drink.  The middle school Civics Club will host a carnival from 5-7 PM. This is always a great evening of food, fun, and conversation. I hope you are able to come to this fundraiser.

3rd Grade News

Reading/Language Arts
Third grade is reading "Roberto Clemente-Pride of the Pittsburgh Pirates." In this biography, students learn about the life of Roberto Clemente from a young, poor child growing up in Puerto Rico, to joining the major leagues as a Pittsburgh Pirate, and to hitting three thousand hits during his career. The comprehension skill covered cause and effect. Students identified singular and plural nouns as a grammar skill. The vocabulary skill focused on the prefix of mis-. The phonics skill covered long i words.

The results of the lesson 4 weekly assessment have been included in the take home folder.

Next week third grade will be taking the Unit 1 Benchmark test. This assessment will cover concepts learning in vocabulary, comprehension, and grammar over the first five lessons.
Science
3rd grade continues to learn about forces. Students have identified balanced and unbalance forces. Students have also identified types of forces such as friction and gravity.

Math
Students will take the chapter 1 test on Thursday, October 10th. The test covered addition and subtraction strategies. The next chapter will focus on representing and interpreting data.

Mindfulness
Mindfulness is the quality or state of being aware. It means paying full attention to something. It means slowing down to really notice what you're doing. The benefits of being mindful include improved attention, emotional regulation, greater compassion, and reduction of stress and anxiety. Mindfulness is a skill that takes time to develop. Starting this week, third graders have been participating in meditation and breathing exercises to help students be more mindful in the classroom. Students may bring a towel from home to use. Towels will be kept in the closet and sent home periodically to be washed.

A handout about "What is Mindfulness?" has been included in the take home folder.

Homecoming Activities
Homecoming activities will take place this Friday, October 11th. St. Malachy School will be hosting "Panther Pancakes" for St. Malachy students and their guests. Serving in the gym will be from 7:00-8:15 AM. This is also a Spirit Day. Students are encouraged to wear their Creston Panther gear. Students may pay $1 to wear sweats and/or hat. There will be pep rally with football players, cheerleaders, and the Peppers dance team in the morning. School dismisses at 12:10 PM on this day. No lunch will be served. The parade begins uptown at 1:30 PM. Please let the school know if your child has different dismissal plans than normal.
