3rd Grade News

Math
Overall third grade did a great job on the chapter 6 test covering the process of division. We are now covering chapter 7 that focuses on each divisor. Please continue to practice the basic multiplication and division facts at home.

Science
Third grade is covering the topic of matter.  Students are learning about solids, liquids. and gases.  The class made models representing the atoms in each state of matter.

Reading/Language Arts
This week third grade is taking the Unit 5 Benchmark test.  Please look for the results in next week's take home folder.

Third grade is also reading and writing poetry.  This week third grade wrote a shape poem.  Prewriting consisted of students making a list of concrete nouns.  Students then choose two of the nouns and wrote words associated with the nouns.  Students then created a "picture" of one of the nouns using the words.

Iowa Assessments
St. Malachy School will be taking the Iowa Assessments during the week of April 4th-8th. Tests will be taken during the morning. Snacks will be provided by the PTO during the week. Students need to bring #2 pencils to use during the testing.  No mechanical pencils can be used. Please make sure students eat a good breakfast each morning and get a good night's sleep.

Reading Incentive Program
March calendars are due back to school by Thursday, April 7th.  Certificates will be sent home on this day in take home folders.  The program ended in March.

3rd Grade News

There will be no school from Friday, March 18th-Sunday, March 27th.  Classes resume on Monday, March 28th.  I hope everyone enjoys their spring break.  My family and I will be in Des Moines for my daughter's dance competition on the 19th and 20th.  On Monday, March 21st, we are headed to Riviera Maya, Mexico to spend the week.  Enjoy the week off of school, and please come back to school on Monday, March 28, ready to finish out the third trimester.  

Take home folders are being sent home with your child today.  Please return on Monday, March 28th.

3rd Grade News

Science
Third grade is now studying about matter. Third grade has been examining objects for their physical properties.

Math
Students have been relating division to multiplication by building arrays and using fact families. There will be test over the process of division on Thursday next week. Please look for a review to come home with your child.

Reading/Language Arts
Third grade is reading a realistic fiction selection entitled "Dog-Of-The-Sea-Waves." This story describes the relationship between the seal and the boy.  The comprehension skill covered author's purpose.  The vocabulary skill discussed shades of meanings of words. Students learned about complex sentences in grammar.  Terms like dependent clauses and and subordinating conjunctions were introduced to the students. The class also learned about the prefixes bi-, re-, un, and pre- in phonics.

Next week the spelling post test and the weekly assessment will be on Thursday, March 17th.  Upon returning from spring break, third grade will take the Unit 5 Benchmark test.

Parent/Teacher Conferences
Third grade conferences are scheduled for Tuesday, March 15th and Thursday, March 17th. There are still a few parents that have not signed up. Please use the following link http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F044DACAC2DA5F94-mrs1 to sign up for a time. There is no school on Friday, March 18th.


Optional Sack Lunch

On Friday, March 11th, St. Malachy students have the option of bringing their lunch to school.  Please note this is not a requirement.  It is just an option for the students if you wish. Milk is provided if bringing lunch. If eating the school's lunch, the options are tomato soup or a peanut butter sandwich.  Please remember it is also Lent.  

Dress Code
Just a reminder about dress code with the months of March, April, and May upon us. Students still need to follow dress code with the warmer weather.

Everyday, all-year-long expectations: 
A. Clothing should be clean and free of holes, rips, or tears. 
B. Clothing should be modest and allow students to maintain modesty while sitting, standing, and moving. Necklines should be high enough to provide complete coverage. The bottom of the garment must extend to at least mid-thigh. 
C. Undergarments are to be covered at all times. 
D. Leggings may be worn as long as the bottom of the dress, skirt or short extends to at least mid-thigh. 
E. Sleeves are required for all. 
F. Winter clothing (including boots, hats, mittens/gloves, and coats) is to be worn as needed. If there is snow on the ground, boots are needed. Students not wearing snow boots will stand in a cleared area during recess. All snow gear must be taken home at the end of each week. 
G. Shoes must be able to stay securely fastened to the student’s feet during activities and throughout the entire school day. 
H. PE attire includes tennis shoes/athletic shoes that stay securely fastened to the feet during exercise and activity. Girls who wear dresses or skirts should also wear shorts. 
I. White t-shirts/undershirts may not be worn as outer wear. 

Summer/Fall/Spring Exceptions 
A. Shorts will be allowed in August, September, October, March, April and May. (Note: The bottom of the short must extend to at least mid-thigh.) 
B. Middle school students will be allowed to wear slip on shoes in August, September, October, March April and May. 

Mass Day/Holy Day - all day attire 
A. Students are expected to dress up on Mass days. 
B. Dress shirts, polo shirts, sweaters, turtlenecks, and dress slacks for boys. 
C. Dresses, skirts, slacks, sweaters, turtlenecks, and blouses for girls. 
D. Leggings may be worn as long as the bottom of the dress or skirt extends to at least mid-thigh.
E. No denim of any kind or color (includes skirts, shirts, pants, dresses, and jumpers) on Mass days. F. No dress shorts, gauchos, Capri, crop pants, or split skirts on Mass days. 
G. No t-shirts, sweatshirts or athletic gear on Mass days.

Auction
The St. Malachy Foundation Gala and Auction is this Saturday, March 5th.  Please consider attending this great event. Thank to everyone who donated to the third grade auction basket.  It turned out great! Special thanks for Lacy Mullin for coordinating the basket.  Also a special thanks for Rebecca Ide and Diana Ide for their work on the quilt for the silent auction.  It turned out fabulous!  Pictures of both items have been posted on the blog.

Parent/Teacher Conferences
I will be conducting parent/teacher conferences on Tuesday, March 15th from 3:40 PM-5:20 PM and on Thursday, March 17th from 1:00-5:00 PM and 6:00-9:20 PM.  There is no school on Friday, March 18th.  Please sign for a time using this link provided.  I look forward to discussing your child's progress with parents during conferences.

Late Slips
Please remember now that the third trimester has started third grade is following the late slip policy that is used in fourth through eighth grades at St. Malachy School.

February Reading Minutes
Eight students met the goal for the month of February.  Total minutes read for the month were 7,085. The most minutes read for the month was Aubrie Mohr with 2,316. March is the last month of the reading program.  Let's try and finish strong with all students meeting the goal.

Math
Students are working on the concept of division in math.  Students are learning about dividends, divisors, and quotients.  In addition to drawing models to represent the number of groups and the number in each group, students are learning how to use repeated subtraction to solve division problems.

Science
A test covering the solar system will be on Monday, March 7th.  Students guide will go home with the students Friday.

Reading/Language Arts
This week's fantasy story "The Journey of Oliver K. Woodman" students read letters written between a niece, her uncle, and those who take Oliver on his journey from South Carolina to California.  The comprehension skill focused on sequence.  Students learned to look for clue words such as first, next, then, and last.  The vocabulary strategy covered on the suffixes or -er and -est.  In grammar the class worked on possessive nouns and pronouns.  The phonics skills focused on the suffixes of -ful, -y, -ous, -er, and -ly.
