 Reading/Language Arts
This week the third grade class is reading "Mountains-Surviving on Mt. Everest.  In this informational text students learn facts about Mt. Everest and learn about sixteen year old Temba Tesheri Sherpa's journey to the top of the mountain. 

The results of the lesson 24 weekly assessment have been included in the take home folder.  Next week students will be taking the Unit 5 Benchmark test.

Math
Third graders continue to learn about fractions in math.  Students have identified equal parts of a whole, made equal shares, and identified unit fractions and fractions of a whole.

Science
The class continues to learn about scientists. Students have studied Isaac Newton and Dian Fossey.

Biography Book Report Projects and Presentations
Biography book report projects are due Wednesday,  May 5th. Students will present to the class on this day. Please have students practice their presentation at home, so they are prepared on what he/she will share with the class. A scoring rubric was included in the packet of papers that went home. 

Lap-A-Thon
    1224frSt. Malachy School will holds its annual Lap-A-Thon on Thursday, May 6th. Information about this event was sent home in last week's take home folder.

Science
The class is learning about scientists who have made contributions. Students have learned about Albert Einstein and Galileo Galilei.

Math
Third grade students are learning about fractions. Students have learned about equal parts of a whole.

I am sending a copy of the division basic facts home in the take home folder for parents to view how their child did. Please continue to practice at home on all the basic facts.

Reading/Language Arts 
This week the third grade class is reading "Dog of the Sea Waves" by James Rumford. Five brothers are exploring the Hawaiian Islands. One brother, Manu, saves the life of an injured seal. The story follows the friendship that develops. The comprehension skill focused on author's purpose. Students worked on the prefixes un-, re-, un-, and bi- as the phonics skill. The vocabulary strategy covered shades of meaning among words. The grammar skill introduced students to complex sentences. Students learned about independent and dependent clauses.

Mass
The third grade class will lead the mass on Wednesday, April 28th. Speaking parts have been included in the take home folder. Parents may watch the mass online.
Spring Clean Up
St.  Malachy School is having a cleaning up day on Friday, April 23rd.  Third through eighth grade students need to bring a rake. Please label the rake with your last name. Rakes can be dropped off at school Friday morning by parents if your child rides the bus. Students should wear clothes that can get dirty.  We are also asking for a $1 donation from each student. These funds will be used to purchase soil and flowers for the front entrance of the school.

This is a Spirit Day. Since students can already wear sweats, they can pay $1 to wear a hat.

Biography Book Report Project
Biography book report projects are due on Wednesday, May 5th. Hopefully students have the books read and working on answering the questions. 

Please have your child practice his/her presentation so they are prepared to share with the class.

ISASP Testing
Students in third grade will have finished the ISASP testing for this school year on Thursday. Parents will be informed of results once we get them back and have reviewed them.
Science
The third grade class was tested over the integumentary (hair, skin, and nails) body system. The next unit of study will be studying scientists who have made contributions in the different fields of science.

Math
Students worked on order of operations (multiply and divide, then add and subtract). Students will have a test on Monday, April 19th covering division basic facts, multi step problems, and order of operations. On Tuesday, April 20th, students will take a basic facts division test. Please check with your child about a review page.

Biography Book Report Projects
The students should have a good start on reading the biography book that was sent home two weeks ago. The form to fill out and the project are due on Wednesday, May 5th. Students should practice their presentation at home, so they are prepared on what they plan to say.

Math
Third grade continues to work on division during math. The students have covered the division facts dividing by factors zero through ten. Students are also working on solving two step word problems using all four operations and order of operations. Third graders will have a test over division next week.

Reading/Language Arts
This week the class read "The Journey of Oliver K. Goodman" by Darcy Pattison. In this fantasy story, student follow Oliver's journey from Uncle Ray's in South Carolina to his niece Tameka in California. The story is told through the letters written by each person Oliver encounters on his journey. The comprehension skill covered sequencing. The phonics skill focused on the suffixes of -ly, -ful, -y, -ous, and -er. The students worked on the suffixes of -er and -est as the vocabulary skill. The class also worked on possessive nouns as the grammar skill.

The results of the lesson 22 weekly assessment have been included in the take home folder.
Science
The third grade class continues to learn about the integumentary body system. Students have learned about skin and are now learning about hair and nails.

Reading Incentive Program
The reading incentive program has come to an end for this school year. As a whole, the class read for 29,706 minutes during the six months of the reading incentive program. Kylin read the most minutes throughout the program with 4,650 minutes total.  Breckyn read the second most with 4,018 total.  Five students met the reading goal in all six months. Those include Kylin, Breckyn, Brock, Indie, and Kinsley. Four students met the goal in five out of the six months. Those students are Sam, Hayden, Kalvin, and Karsi. Good job to all! Please continue to keep reading.

ISASP Testing
Students at STM in grades third though eighth will be taking the Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress the week of April 12th. Testing will take place during the morning time. These tests will be taken on chrome books. Snacks will be provided by the PTO. A note was sent home last week about sending an encouraging note to your child. A note card and envelope were sent home in the take home folder. Please return these to school by tomorrow.

Please discuss with your child the importance of these statewide assessments.  Students should get a good night's sleep each night and eat a healthy breakfast each morning. We have been doing some practice tests this past week. These tests are very different than the Iowa Assessments previously taken.

Reading/Language Arts
This week third grade read the nonfiction selection "The Journey-The Stories of Migration" by Cynthia Rylant. In this story, students learn about the migratory journey of locusts and whales. The comprehension skill focused on the comparing and contrasting. The vocabulary strategy covered word roots. Students reviewed comparing adjectives and adverbs as the grammar skill. The phonics skill involved -ing and -ed ending in words.

The lesson 21 weekly assessment results have been included in the take home folder.
Science
The class has been learning about healthy habits. Students are learning about the integumentary system, which includes the skin, hair, and nails.

Math
The third grade students continue to work on solving division problems. Students have solved problems dividing by 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,  6, 7, and 10.  Please continue to practice the basic facts at home.  One of the third grade standards is students are able to multiply and divide fluently.

Biography Book Report Project
The third grade students have been assigned a biography book report project to complete. All of the information you will need has been included in a packet in the take home folder. Each student picked out their biography book today. This project is due back to school by Wednesday, May 5th. Please let me know if you have any questions. 

The Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress
During the week of April 12th-16th, third through eighth grade students will be taking the ISASP tests. These standardized tests will be taken online. Students need to make sure their headphones are working. Please make sure your child gets a good night's sleep and eats a good breakfast each morning. Also, discuss with your child the importance of these tests. Encourage your child to do their best. The PTO will be supplying snacks for the students. 

I have included a note card and an envelope in the take home folder. Please write a positive note of encouragement to your child and send it back to school in the envelope. Feel free to decorate the note card and envelope as you wish. I will give the note to your child before we begin test taking.

Monday, April 12th
Originally, Monday April 12th was a no school day for students and professional development day for teachers. Due to snow days, this day will now be a regular school day.
