Science
The class continues to learn about force. Students are studying magnetism. Students experimented with magnets.

Math
The next chapter in math will focus on representing and interpreting data. Students will organize data, use and make picture graphs, line plots, and bar graphs.

Please look for chapter one math tests to come home next week to be viewed and signed by a parent.

Reading/Language Arts
This week third grade is reading the narrative nonfiction selection called Bat Loves the Night in which readers learn about the night activity of bats. The comprehension skill covered sequence of events. The vocabulary skill focused on the suffixes of -able and -ible. Students learned about action and being verbs in grammar. The students played "Action Verb" charades to aid in their understanding of this skill. The phonics skill went over long and short vowels with the VCV pattern.

The results of the Unit 1 Benchmark test have been included in the take home folder. There are three sub tests that the students complete. The "Reading and Analyzing" section have students reading a passage and answering multiple choice comprehension and vocabulary questions. In the "Revising and Editing" section students are looking for changes in the way the sentences are written. The third section the students complete is "Reading Complex Text." In this test, students must write down their answers to comprehension questions about reading sections of a story. The benchmark tests show how well the students are understanding and using the skills and strategies taught in the previous lessons. The benchmark test is more difficult than the weekly assessments.

Schedule
St. Malachy School is in session on Friday, October 12th. The public school is not in session. There will not be any bus transportation this Friday. Please plan accordingly.

Book Order
A book order was sent home in last week's take home folder. All orders are due by Friday, October 12th.

Fluency
Another important aspect of reading is fluency. One of the components of the FAST testing given three times during the year assesses a student's ability to be fluent. Fluency is the ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression. Be a fluent reader is a skill we practice at school. I have included a handout in the take home folder pertaining to fluency. I have parents ask how they can help at home. The handout has suggestions for parents to use at home.
