Math
Third grade has been practicing multiplying by multiples of 10. Students have used the Distributive Property to solve problems and found unknown factors. The chapter 5 math test will be next week.
Science
The class is finishing up studying about the solar system. Students will have a test next week over this topic.

Reading/Language Arts
This week third grade is reading the play "Two Bear Cubs." The comprehension skill focused on story structure. Students analyzed the setting, characters, and plot. The vocabulary strategy focused on the prefixes of pre-, re-, and bi-. Students worked on "oo" vowel sounds in spoon and wood. The grammar skill focused on irregular verbs.

The lesson 18 weekly assessment results have been included in the take home folder.

Reading Incentive Program
February calendars have been included in this week's take home folders. The goal is 500 minutes total. January calendars are due back to school by Wednesday, February 7th.
Book Order
A book order has been included in the take home folder. Orders can be returned to school with cash or check (made payable to Scholastic) or submitted online by credit card at www.scholastic.com.  All orders are due by Friday, February 9th.

Auction Items
Donations are still needed for "Gardening" basket that grades third, fourth, and fifth are doing together, and the photograph for the third grade silent auction item. Third grade will be taking photos for the silent auction on Friday, February 2nd.  The St. Malachy Foundation Dinner and Auction is scheduled for Saturday, March 3rd.

Valentine's Day Party
St. Malachy School will be having Valentine's Day parties during the afternoon of Tuesday, February 13th since Valentine's Day is also Ash Wednesday. Students will make valentine containers at school. Valentine cards may be brought for each classmate. A class list has also been included in the take home folder.

Bring A Friend to School
St. Malachy students are encourage to bring a friend to school on Wednesday, February 14th. There is no school at the public school on this day. Students will need to dress up since this is a mass day. Hot lunch will also be provided for all students. There will be no bus transportation since the public school is not in session.

Late Slips
The third trimester begins on Monday, February 26th. Late slips begin on this day for third graders. Every time a student doesn’t not have an assignment (spelling packet, writing missed words, getting a test signed, etc) completed, he or she receives a late slip. The student must get the late slip signed and the homework completed and returned the next day.  If the homework is completed and the late slip is signed there is no other consequence.  If the late slip is not signed or the homework is not completed by the next day, the student will have to serve a detention.  On the sixth late slip received, the student gets an automatic detention.  Anymore late slips are received after the sixth one also results in detention being served.  Parents will be notified when a detention is to be served.  Students receive late slips from Mrs. Sickels, Miss Surma, and me, so the six late slips allowed are per teacher.  The best way to avoid late slips is to just get homework completed on time!  Please continue to check assignment books to see what was done during the day, what still needs to be completed, and what needs to be signed.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the late slip policy.  My email is nburg@crestonstmalachy.org or by phone at school 782-7125.  By starting the late slip policy now, students know what to expect in the upper grades.  Please take a few minutes to talk to your third grader about the late slip policy and what the consequences are for not getting work completed.
