Reading/Language Arts
This week third grade students are reading the informational text "The Mystery of the Albertosaurus-Phillip Currie's Hunt in the Badlands." The comprehension skill focused on drawing conclusions. The vocabulary strategy covered the suffix -ly meaning "in a certain way." Students worked on the /j/ and /s/ sound and words with VCCCV in phonics. In grammar students continue to work with adjectives. Students used adjectives to compare by adding -er, -ier, -est, -iest, or adding more or most before.

The lesson 16 weekly assessments have been included in the take home folder for your viewing.

Science
Students continue to learn about the solar system. The class has been learning about how the Earth and moon rotate and revolve.

Kysa Downing, from the ISU Extension Office, visited the third grade class this past week. Students made Sky Wheels for locating constellations.

Math
Students will continue to work on multiplication in Chapter 5. We will be using the basic facts to extend knowledge of multiplication.

Coin Wars
The Creston High School FBLA is once again participating in Coin Wars to help raise money for veterans to attend the Honor Flights. Donations will be accepted from Monday, January 22nd-Friday, January 26th. All money brought to school will be placed in a class jar to be collected at the end of the week. The class with the most money will win a pizza party, and the second place winners will win a cookie party. Notes about this event have been included in the take home folder.

Bring a Friend to School
St. Malachy School is hosting a "Bring a Friend" Day on Wednesday, February 14th. There is no school at the public school on this day. The friend being brought to school must currently be in the same grade as the St. Malachy School. There is mass on this day, so guests will need to dress up. Hot lunch will be provided for guests, so no sack lunches. Notes were sent home in last week's take home folder pertaining to this event. On the back of the note is a form that needs filled out about the friend coming to school.

St. Malachy Foundation Dinner and Auction
Notes are being sent home the take home folder pertaining to the basket for the St. Malachy Auction that will take place on Saturday, March 3rd. This year grade bands (PreK-2nd, 3rd-5th, and 6th-8th) are organizing one basket for the auction. Third grade, fourth grade, and fifth grade will have a "Gardening" basket. Heidi Rohrig, Calista Purdum, and Danielle Steele are organizing the basket for our grade band. Donations for this basket are now being accepted. Items or cash/check donations are being accepted.  Items to donate for the basket may include gardening gloves, shovel, watering can, kneeling pad, bug spray, plant food, garden fertilizer, potting soil, hose, pots, seeds/bulbs, garden decor, gift cards, and wheelbarrow (to serve as the basket). These are just suggestions. Feel free to donate any other gardening type items.

Each individual class will still need a personalized silent auction item. 3rd grade will be doing a framed/canvas class photograph with a saying on it. Heidi Rohrig will be taking the pictures and putting it together. Monetary donations are being accepted to cover the cost of the silent auction.
