Reading/Language Arts
This week the third grade class is reading "Yonder Mountain-A Cherokee Legend" by Robert Brushyhead. In this selection, Chief Sky is picking his successor among three of the young Native American men in the tribe. Each is given the same task of going all the way to the top of the mountain. The reader follows Black Bear, Gray Wolf, and and Soaring Eagle as they attempt to accomplish this task. The comprehension skill focused on compare and contrast. Students worked on contractions as the phonics skill. The vocabulary skill reviewed homophones and homographs. The grammar skill covered subject-verb agreement.

Science
Students will be assessed on inherited traits in plants and animals. The next unit of study will be the solar system.

Math
The third grade class has been learning about finding the area of shapes. Students were first introduced to the concept of area by using unit squares to cover the inside of a shape. Students learned about nonstandard units, then standard units. The class was then introduced to multiplying length times width to find the area. The class also practiced finding the area using the Distributive Property of Multiplication.

Please continue to practice the multiplication and division facts at home.
