Science
Students have been learning about how environments can change and how plants and animals adapt to the changes.
Reading/Language Arts
This week third grade is reading "The Extra-Good Sunday" by Beverly Cleary. This selection comes from Ramona Quimby-Age 8.  In this story, Ramona and Beezus complain about supper, so Mr. Quimby has the girls in charge of the next night's dinner. The girls cause all sorts of havoc in the kitchen, but are able to pull of a meal their family will eat and enjoy. The comprehension skill focused on understanding characters and formal and informal language. Students worked on verb tenses (present, past, and future) as the grammar skill. The vocabulary skill introduced students to the thesaurus. Students continued to work on r-controlled vowels as the phonics skill.

In the take home folder are the results of the lesson 14 weekly assessment. These are yours to keep. The class will work though lesson 15 from Tuesday through Monday of next week. The Unit 3 Benchmark assessment will be taken next week as well.

Math
The third grade class has been taught all of the multiplication facts from zero through ten. Students should be able to understand the process of multiplication and be able to recall the facts from memory. Please spending time practicing the basic facts at home. There will be a test next week over chapter 4.

St. Malachy Gala and Auction
The St. Malachy Foundation will holds its annual gala and auction on Saturday, February 27th. Due to COVID, the event will be held online this year. Classrooms are responsible for a basket for the live auction and a personalized class item for the silent auction. This year second and third grade will be collaborating on a "Shop Local" Basket. All of the items in the basket will be purchased from local business owners. Parent help is needed to make this basic a success. Please send all donations to school by February 12th. There is a note in the take home folder from Jenny Studer and Beth Knutstrom, third grade homeroom parents about the basket.

For the silent auction item, the class is putting together a cookbook of the students' favorite recipes. In the take home folder is a recipe card for your child to fill out with his/her favorite recipe. Please return this back to school as soon as possible. There is a note in the take home folder from Jenny and Beth explaining the silent auction item.
