Reading/Language Arts
This week third grade is reading the realistic fiction story called "Kamishibai Man." In this story an elderly Japanese man remembers how he used to ride his bicycle to town where he would tell stories to the children and sell them candies his wife made. Gradually fewer and fewer children came to listen due to the invention of the television. Years later, the man returns to find things have completely changed. In the end the man is surrounded by familiar faces. The children he used to entertain have returned as adults and eager to have their children listen to his stories. The comprehension skill covered cause and effect. The vocabulary skill focused on using a dictionary. The phonics skill worked on -ow and -ou sounds. In grammar students learned about abstract nouns.

Math
Third grade continues to work on analyzing and interpreting data. Students have been introduced to a line plot.

A review page for Chapter 2 has been included in the take home folder for extra practice in preparation for the test. This does not need returned to school.

Science
3rd grade students are now learning about motion. Students are learning about frame of reference, speed, and direction. Students are also applying what they learned about balanced and unbalanced forces to the concept of motion.

Veteran's Day Program
St. Malachy School will be hosting a Veteran's Day program on Friday, November 9th, at 2:00 PM. Students are encouraged to wear red, white, and blue clothing on this day. It is also a Spirit Day. Students can wear sweats for $1.

Book Order
A book order has been included in the take home folder. Orders can be returned to school by using cash or check (payable to Scholastic Book Club) or submitted online paying by credit card.  All orders need submitted by Friday, November 16th. Books make great Christmas gifts. If wanting to order books as gifts, just let me know and I can let you know when the orders arrived back to school.
