Reading/Language Arts
Module 1 in the third grade reading series is all about bold, unique, and  interesting characters. In lesson 1, the students are reading Marisol McDonald Doesn't Match by Monica Brown. This is a story about a lively girl who explores how individuality makes people different. Comprehension skills are covering point of view, making and confirming predictions, literary elements, and theme. The grammar skill reviewed subjects and predictions of simple sentences.  Students also reviewed short vowels as the decoding skill. The vocabulary covered using context clues and the prefixes of mis- and un-.

During Module 1 students will be writing a personal narrative.

Math
The first topic the third grade class will focus on is multiplication.  Skills to be covered include relating multiplication to repeated addition, using a number line, and making arrays.

Science
The first topic that third grade will be covering is force. Students have been learning about push/pull and strong/weak forces.

Class Fridge
Just a reminder that third grade students can bring a picture from home to have on our "Class Fridge." This can be a family picture, a picture showing off an accomplishment, a vacation, a sporting activity, etc.
Dress Code
The school's dress code can be found on the St. Malachy School website. If you have any questions, please look there for reference.

The rule about leggings (long or short) seems to be the one that gets discussed the most. I have included the rule here.
Leggings may be worn as long as the bottom of the dress, skirt or shirt extends to at least mid-thigh.

Behavior Policy
The STM school board updated the discipline policy. A copy of it has been included in the take home folder.

This past week, the third, fourth, and fifth grade class developed a social contract. All students in these grades signed the contract agreeing to follow the guidelines established. I have also included a copy of the social contract in the folder.

Extra Curricular Activities
One of the ways that I get to know the students in my class is by attending one of their out of school activities. With my adult children not at home, I have more free time. If your child has an event such as a sporting activity, dance recital, 4H exhibit showing, etc. outside of school, please email the time and date. I will check my schedule to see if I am available to attend.
