Math
The class is starting a unit on graphing. The students will learn about bar graphs and picture graphs.
Reading/Language Arts
This week the third grade class is reading the humorous fiction selection "The Extra Good Sunday" by Beverly Cleary. In this story, Ramona and Beezus have to make dinner for the family after complaining about the meal their mother prepared. The reader follows the girls and the ups and downs of following recipes, using the oven, and setting the table. In the end, the reader discovers if Ramona and Beezus were successful in making an edible meal for the family. The comprehension skill covered character traits, motivations, and feelings. Students also worked on using a thesaurus as the vocabulary skill. The grammar skill focused on verb tense. The phonics skill covered words with ur, ir, er, and or.
Science
The class continues to learn about space. Students have learned about the planets Earth, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn.
Catholic Schools Week
Next week STM has a variety of activities planned. On Sunday, January 30th, is the kick-off mass at Holy Spirit Church beginning at 9:00 AM. A Spirit Day is planned for Monday, January 31st. Students and staff are asked to wear their STM gear. The entire staff will be heading out to lunch with volunteers watching the students. Students need to bring a sack lunch from home. Milk will be provided. For Tuesday, February 1st, students are asked to dress up like an adult. During the afternoon, students will be completing a variety of fun rotations throughout the classrooms. Students will dress up as the letter of their name on Wednesday, February 2nd. Also, students will be making valentines for community helpers. On Thursday, February 2nd, students are asked to wear work out clothes. Students will be going to the YMCA during the day. Third grade students will need to bring their swim suits and a towel preferably in another bag other than their school bag. Students are also going to need a sack lunch with a drink on this day. The grandparents/special guest mass is planned for Friday, February 4th. All students and staff are asked to dress up in mass.
St. Malachy Foundation Auction
Donations are still be taken for the third, fourth. fifth grade 3D printer and filament basket for the auction on Saturday, March 5th.

Science
The class is learning about space. The students are currently learning about each of the planets. The class has studied Mercury and Venus.
Math
The class has been learning about finding area of regular and irregular shapes. Students will have a test over finding area on Friday, January 21st.
Reading/Language Arts
This week the class is reading the nonfiction selection "Aero and Officer Mike-Police Partners by Joan Plummer Russell. In this story the reader follows police officer Mike and his K-9 partner Aero through their day as they work, play, and train. The comprehension skill focused on author's purpose. Students worked on the vocabulary strategy using the prefix in- and im-. Also, students worked on pronoun-verb agreement as the grammar skill. The phonics skill covered words ar, or, and ore.
The lesson 13 weekly assessment results have been included in the take home folder.
St. Malachy Foundation Auction
The St. Malachy Foundation's annual auction will take place on Saturday, March 5th. Each grade band is responsible for basket for the live auction. Third, fourth, and fifth grade will be putting together a 3D printer and filament basket. Donations for the basket are now being accepted. Please have donations contributed by Thursday, January 27th. There is a note in the take home folder pertaining to the basket.
The third grade class will also be creating a personalized silent auction item with the help of Jacquie Merritt.
Catholic Schools Week
This year Catholic Schools Week will take place from Sunay, January 30th-Friday, February 4th. There are many fun activities planned. A note was sent home in last week's take home folder listing out each dress up day. This year includes a STM Spirit Day, dressing like a grown-up, dressing up like the letter of your name, wearing workout clothes, and dress up day.
If you have not returned the note letting me know who will be attending the grandparents/special guest mass, please let me know soon. School will be dismissing at 1 PM on this day. A grandparent or special guest will be transporting children to Holy Spirit Church for mass that begins at 1:30 PM.

Reading/Language Arts
This week the third grade class is reading "Yonder Mountain-A Cherokee Legend" by Robert Brushyhead. In this selection, Chief Sky is picking his successor among three of the young Native American men in the tribe. Each is given the same task of going all the way to the top of the mountain. The reader follows Black Bear, Gray Wolf, and and Soaring Eagle as they attempt to accomplish this task. The comprehension skill focused on compare and contrast. Students worked on contractions as the phonics skill. The vocabulary skill reviewed homophones and homographs. The grammar skill covered subject-verb agreement.
Science
Students will be assessed on inherited traits in plants and animals. The next unit of study will be the solar system.
Math
The third grade class has been learning about finding the area of shapes. Students were first introduced to the concept of area by using unit squares to cover the inside of a shape. Students learned about nonstandard units, then standard units. The class was then introduced to multiplying length times width to find the area. The class also practiced finding the area using the Distributive Property of Multiplication.
Please continue to practice the multiplication and division facts at home.

Welcome back to school. There are many fun and educational activities planned for the students. I have a doctor appointment next Monday afternoon, so Mrs. Weight will be the substitute for the afternoon. Friday, January 14th is a Spirit Day. Pay $1 to wear sweat. The winter FAST screening for reading will be going on the week of January 17th. The kindergarten and the third grade classes will lead the mass on Wednesday, January 19th.

Science
The third grade class has been learning about inherited plant and animal traits.
Math
The class is currently preparing for the topic 5 (fluently multiply and divide within 100). I have planned to have the topic 5 assessment next Monday. Students will bring home the practice test that we completed in class together on Friday. Students need to continue to practice the basic facts at home.
Reading/Language Arts
This week the third grade class read "Tops and Bottoms" by Janet Stevens. In this trickster tale, clever Hare tricks lazy Bear into planting different types of vegetables based upon where the best parts are from bottom, middle, and top. Bear learns a valuable lesson in the process. The comprehension skill covered theme and point of view. Students also worked on writing sentences with quotation marks as the grammar skill. As a vocabulary skill, the students worked with idioms. The phonics skill covered homophones and words ending in -er and -le.
The lesson 11 weekly assessment results have been included in the take home folder.
Stocking Stuffers
Third graders can bring their stocking stuffer gifts beginning on Monday, December 20th. The students will be stuffing their classmates stockings Wednesday, December 22nd, during the class party.

Christmas Program
The whole student body did a wonderful job a the Christmas program. Mrs. Stoner always put together a great show.
Math
The third grade students continue to work on multiplication and division. Students have been working on solving and writing word problems. Please continue to work on the basic facts at home. The students took a fluency test. I have included a copy in the take home folder for your viewing.
Science
Students are learning about animal life cycles. The class has compared and contract different animals. Some animals, such as mammals, have live births. Other animals, such as birds, hatch from eggs. The class has also discussed animals that go through metamorphosis from birth to adult.
Reading/Language Arts
This week the students are reading the nonfiction selection "Technology Wins the Game" by Mark Andrews . In this selection, students learn about how different types of sports technology have changed over the years. Students are working on sequencing as the comprehension skill. The phonics skill covered words with -oi and -oy. The class also worked on the suffixes -less, -ful, and -ous as the vocabulary skill. The grammar skill covered plural nouns such as changing y to i and irregular nouns.
The results the of the Unit 2 Benchmark test have been included in the take home folder.
Mass Parts
The third grade class will lead the mass on Wednesday, December 15th. Parts have been included in the take home folder. While I will practice with the students at school, please practice the parts with them at home. Parents are more than welcome to come to the liturgy beginning at 9:15 AM that day.
Reading Incentive Program
The November reading results are in. Braden, Presley, Natalie, Harlow, Finn, Leo, Harper, and Londyn all met the goal. Harper read the most minutes (902) during the month of November. The class read for 4,981 minutes total. This is an increase from the month of October.
Stocking Stuffers
The third grade class at St. Malachy will have a classroom Christmas party on Wednesday, December 22nd. This year the third graders will be stuffing classmate’s stockings. I will provide each student with a stocking. Students can bring in a stocking stuffer item for each of their classmates. Stocking stuffers ideas include pencils, erasers, candy, gum, stickers, etc. The Dollar Tree would be a good store to purchase items. There are 10 students in the class. It will be lots of fun, and the students will love giving and receiving the small goodies. Please let me know if you have any questions.
