Reading/Language Arts
This week third grade read the humorous fiction story called A Fine, Fine School. In this story, a principal thinks everything about his school is fine. He decides to have school on the weekends which then leads to school during summer vacation. The principal doesn't realize the students are missing out on the learning that takes place at home. In the end, the principal decides school should only be on the weekdays. The comprehension skill covered learning about story structure. Students identified setting, characters, and plot. The phonics skill covered short vowels and dividing VCCV words into syllables. The grammar skill focused on complete subjects and complete predicates.

The lesson 1 weekly assessment will be on Friday, September 1st. Students will be assessed on skills learned this past week. There will also be a spelling post test on Friday.

Math
Third grade starts the year with addition and subtraction. Students have been introduced to the Identify Property of Addition that states that the sum of any number and zero is that number (7+0=7). The Commutative Property of Addition that states that you can add two or more numbers in any order and get the same sum (3+4 = 4+3 and both equal 7). Students are also using place value to round to the nearest ten or hundred.

Please practice the basic addition and subtraction facts at home. Being able to solve basic facts will help students with larger problems that the third graders will be solving.

Science
Third grade is beginning the year learning about plants. There has been a discussion about plant parts and plant needs.

Social Contract

The third grade class will be having weekly class meetings. In our first class meeting of the year, students in third, fourth, and fifth grades developed a social contract. A social contract is an agreement of behavior. All of the students and teachers signed the social contract. The students know if they do not follow the social contract there will be consequences. You can find a copy of the social contract in my blog pages. Please discuss this contract with your child at home as you see necessary.

The end of another school year is upon us. Thank you for choosing to send your child to St. Malachy. I have enjoyed having your student in third grade. Each student has grown academically and behaviorally. I hope all families have a wonderful summer. I hope to make it to St. Malachy students' summer activities to watch them do what they enjoy. Please take some time over the next couple of months to have your child read to you and practice math problems. Any extra work done during the summer benefits your child for the next school year.

Music Program
The music program was a huge success! All of the students did a fantastic job of performing. Good job to all of the third grade students! A special thank you to Mrs. Stoner. We are so blessed to have such a great music teacher for our St. Malachy students.

Field Day
Students enjoyed an afternoon of fun competition complete with an obstacle course, poison pit, shoe pile/3 leg race, tug of war, and dodgeball.
